I took some pictures that I will add and explain, the captions will be above the picture.

As I was driving in I saw some of the farm land that the Amish base their income on. It looked like a boring way to spend your day.
More farmland!
The closer I got to the heart of the Amish community the more horse buggies I saw, Amish arent allowed to use electricity so they are forced to go without cars.
As I drove I saw a family of Amish just chilling on the back of their buggy and took a picture.
The men in the family are forced to wear these straw hats that looked uncomfortable.
The children are only taught what they need to survive in teh world like how to be a blacksmith or how to farm instead of learning about things they don’t need to know to do their jobs like history.
Old school dryer which uses propane.
They wear old fashion clothes like these day in and day out.
They sleep in regular beds just like us.
They use sewing machines that are seemingly years out of date.
They wash their clothes using this out of date wash machine.
Jul 12, 2008 9:14 pm - When their children are old enough, they are encouraged to live among "The English" (their term for non-Amish) for some time. At this time, they experience the outside world, and determine if they want to remain Amish. So the Amish adults you see are the true believers, having chosen their lives as adults.
Imagine that; a fundamentalist bunch of Christians that doesn’t care whether or not you believe as they do. In fact, they don’t participate in politics at all. Maybe other Christians should take note. And they don’t beg for money from their congregations, either.
Jul 12, 2008 9:21 pm - By the way, they dry their laundry on a clothesline. That picture is of an old-fashioned Maytag wringer washer. It doesn’t have the timer and controls of a typical modern washer. You have to fill it with water manually, either from a hose, or in a specially designed kettle that’s heated on the stove. Then you turn it on, and it agitates. And that’s all it does. You have to drain it manually, usually by lowering the end of the drain hose down to the floor, and gravity does the rest. And there’s no spin cycle to get the excess water out of your clothes, hence the wringer. Maytag didn’t stop making these things until 1984. And it runs on propane as a holdover from the days when people who lived on farms didn’t have electricity. Which describes the Amish.

what i dont get is if they cant use electricity why cant they drive cars? they arent electric
They aren’t allowed to have modern conveniences in their homes, which includes cars, electricity, indoor plumbing, and other stuff.
They don’t mind that the modern world exists outside of theirs. If you hire an Amish carpenter to help remodel your non-Amish house, he’ll ask where you keep your electric saw and where he can plug it in. Just not in their homes, that’s all they ask.
In Pennsylvania, if you are willing to sign a paper declaring it would violate your religious beliefs to take your photograph, you can get a drivers license or ID card without a photograph.
All five stars in the comments yet a shitty rating.
I’ll vote it up. I like the fact that the Amish don’t beg money to support their lifestyles or shove their views on everyone else or get involved in politics. I just think the technology line is arbitrarily drawn. I mean, is a wheel not technology? Why is it preferable to enslave a horse to do the bidding of man rather than a car or a tractor? Aren’t buttons a technology? Seems they should be running around naked and living like nomads. It’s just weird. But whatever. Harm none, do as ye will.
Jul 21, 2008 6:35 pm - Q. What’s the difference betweena religion and a cult?
A. About 100 years.
Other religious utopian colonies have been attempted over the years, but the Amish are among the few that remain. The Shakers, best remembered for simple wooden furniture, died off because they considered sex to be sinful, even among married couples who wished to have children. Poor planning I’d say.
The Amish have changed a bit with the times. Instead of relying entirely on subsistence farming, they make and sell furniture to outsiders. They managed to not take the route of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints for income: Get the girls pregnant as soon as physically possible, send them into town to the welfare office, have them tell the caseworker they don’t know who the father is, and collect government checks.
