This is an egg on how to convert a .VOB file, which is a standard DVD file, to a .MOV file (which you can convert this file to a .AVI or what ever you want)
The only thing you will need for this conversion is QuickTime Player, which most people will already have this program anyways.
Incase anyone is curious, the version I am running is: QuickTime Player 7.4.5
Why would I want to convert a .VOB to another file type? Well if you want to edit a movie file, you can not open a .VOB file in video editing programs, at least not Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 or Windows Movie Maker.
Why not just right click on the file and rename as .avi or .mpeg? Well I have had many experiences of doing that and it cuts out half of the clip, and even taking out the picture completey and just running sound.
So this is a way to convert your file from a .VOB file to any other file you want basically without loosing any quality, and it does not change the size of the video file either.
So to start out open up QuickTime Player, then click File at the top and "Open File..."
Next click the down arrow next to "File type" and select "All Files (*.*)"
This will make all files appear, instead of only the .MOV files, which is default for QuickTime Player
Then select your file, making sure that the file actually plays might be a good idea, then click File and go to "Save As..."
This will bring up a save box, you can change the location as you wish, but leave the file name, you will have a chance to change that later.
Depending on the speed of your computer, and the size of the file, it might take a minute. You’ll know when the file is done saving because the save box from the previous picture will go away.
Now you should have a .MOV file and your original file will be in place as well.
Now, if you wish you may right click and rename the .MOV to a .AVI or what ever you wish, though just incase something else goes wrong, you may want to make a back up copy of the new .MOV file.
If you wish to open up the file into say Windows Movie Maker you will have to rename the file to a .AVI. When a screen comes up saying "Are you sure you want to change it?" just click Yes.
Now you will be able to open up your file in Windows Movie Maker, or any other video editing program.
This to me seems like I am taking to many steps to open up a damn file in Windows Movie Maker, and there are shorter ways, such as download a program that does this for you, but those cost money...which this is RE where no one has money, thats why we joined this site =]
If you have any questions I will try to answer them as best I can.
Also, there are more uses for this than just video editing, say you want to have a .AVI file of a dvd you want, you can rip the .VOB file to your computer and make it a .AVI and put it on your iPod or something..use your imagination
Aug 22, 2008 7:00 pm - haha yeah its pretty simple, it took me a long time to figure out how to convert these files, I’ve googled many times and came up with nothing, so then I tried this and it worked so I thought I’d share with RE
Zero because it’s not flammable, combustable, or fun.
And a 0* on your profile for you immaturity. He posts a good egg that actually has thought put into it, and you have to act like a fucking 12 year old.... Wouldn’t surprise me if you were.

Aug 23, 2008 9:17 am - This works on a mac as well..I had a mac in high school, and mac absolutely has QuickTime Player, seeing as its by apple haha, and I don’t know about on your computer, but on the one I had I had like ALL of the adobe programs, it came with the computer..
Aug 23, 2008 4:54 pm - I didn’t delete any comments? well I did make a comment and then deleted it, but that was my own, which isn’t rude towards anyone else
Aug 23, 2008 6:04 pm - Someone deleted that kid’s comment who put the long comment full of nothing. Might as well delete both my first ones. So I will say this again, 5* Great egg.
