This egg is just to explain how to upkeep diesel engines, some myths, and a few performance tips.
First off diesel engines are different from gasoline(no shit) only because diesel needs a higher compression to burn, so diesel engines have no spark plugs and they have around a 19 to 1 compression ratio on average and just the heat and pressure from this enormous compression with ignite the diesel, where gas has a compression ratio of around 10 to 1 but it does differ.
So in turn diesel engines have more power because of the much higher compression, but because of that the engine blocks have to be much bigger and tougher to handle it all.
Myth 1
When you hear about having to let your engine idle down for 15 minutes before your shut it off, this is no longer true for todays modern diesels, this used to be necessary because diesels had a bearing that would seize up from heat if not let to cool.
Myth 2
Mixing gas with your diesel fuel to clean out injectors..no, it has a very different viscosity from diesel and will destroy the diesels expensive fuel injection nozzles
Myth 3
Diesels are only for towing...no again diesels are more fuel efficient, have more horsepower, and torque, and they burn cleaner.
If you were to put turbo on your little honda civic with 30 psi of turbo you would have so much fucking pinging because the gas ignites maturely in the cylinder causing knocking or pinging, so you would have to put a higher octane fuel in to prevent this.
But since diesels already have such a high compression ratio you could go all out with turbochargers or superchargers or twin chargers(hell the new f-450s have turbos on their turbos) (by the way your hondas gear box couldn’t take it anyways)
So you wouldn’t have to buy more expensive fuel,
All though diesel is the most...
If your gas truck, van, or car overheats you gotta shut it off, and let it cool, but with diesels you wanna leave it on because shutting it off is about the worst thing you could do, it will cool itself.
Heres another few reasons you should get diesel:
The new VW Jetta TDI has a diesel engine that gets onver 50 mpg, no hybrid bullshit like those little 60 hp toyota prius’s.
Diesel engines last 100’s of thousands of miles longer than gas
You can run your diesel off of vegetable oil yes its true you can! for only about 300 dollars for a conversion kit.
You can get your truck to run off mcdonalds french fries.
(You can ask most restaurants will give you their grease gladly, So free Gas!!)
And thats it so if your not convinced to go diesel well hell i tryed!
..and oh yeah after all this clean burning, fuel efficient shit, it can still tow more than your prius’s, civics, and altimas combined.
Aug 26, 2008 8:38 pm - sry but i cant give this a decent rating
it sounded more like a salesman pitch trying to sell me a diesel vehicle by convincing me how good it is instead of what was promised like performance tips
i expected some simple cheap tweaks one could do to their engine to get better mileage or more performance, not be told how great diesel is.
Aug 27, 2008 9:37 am - the only problem with veggie oil is that it gums up at low temps, like the ones found in the winter. I believe there was a Benz that over came this by having a gas power motor that would run before the diesel kicked in to heat up the diesel fuel by running the exhaust of the gas motor pass the diesel to heat it up. once heated the gas motor would shut down and the diesel would take over expelling the exhaust at a safer distance
ug 27, 2008 2:33 pm - To: Firesale yeah your right so heres a few performance tips also just for you firesale!
Ok so one of the best ways to increase your diesel performance besides buying parts is to find the throttle lever on top of the fuel injection pump and swing it all the way to WOT(which stands for"Wide Open Throttle" and you can unscrew the screw a lil to get more fuel and power on demand, but this will increase your EGT(exhaust gas temp.) which for a regular diesel should stay below 1400 dg F, on a turbo 1600, so i recommend you buy an egt gauge.
#2...obviousl , more air! bigger filter! so simple and cheap
#3 Look for the fuel quantity screw on the side of the fuel pump and turn very little start your truck/car and if you have a light grey exhaust smoke you can richen the fuel until your exhaust begins to darken. once again go get that gauge
k thats it for now

I HATE THOSE PRIUSES
-loud as hell (when accelerating)
-weak as hell
-weird button and switch positions
-shape is weird, takes a while to get used to lane positioning !!
