This is the third instalment in the story of my broken leg.
For the previous instalments, check out My Leg Egg and My Leg Egg II.
Warning:Those 2 eggs contain pictures that may not be suitable for squeamish people. This egg also contains pictures and videos that may not be suitable for squeamish people. They are all rather image intensive, and so will take a long time to load if you are on dialup.
Right, on with the egg! Part 3 of my story.
Last time I told you about how I had my new frame put on. Well, this time I got part of it taken off!
I had a foot plate with 3 pins through my foot holding it in place, to stop my ankle from moving until it was sufficiently healed. Which it has!
Here are some pictures so that you can see the foot plate properly (it’s the square part of the frame).
So, on Wednesday 18th February, I went back to hospital to get this part of the frame removed. I was really excited at the thought of being able to move my ankle again, but really nervous about getting the pins pulled out of my foot. I had watched a youtube video of someone having it done, and it really didn’t help me feel any better!
They don’t numb the leg or put you to sleep or anything, they just cut the pins with wire cutters and give you some laughing gas before they pull them out. I knew this, but watching the video just made it seem worse than I had thought it would be.
So after having some x-rays taken, and waiting around for over 2 hours, I got taken into a little room. The doctor and his sidekick poked about my ankle and studied the x-rays before finally setting to work with the spanners to disconnect the foot frame from the rest of the frame. This felt a bit weird, because now my ankle was free, and it had the weight of the frame pulling my foot down. I hadn’t moved my ankle in over 6 months so you can see why it felt strange! I didn’t get a video of this, but it was boring anyway.
Next they took me through to a different room, where the doctor’s sidekick started cutting the pins so that he could remove the square frame part completely, before giving me the laughing gas and pulling the pins out.
Here is the video of him cutting the pins and removing the frame.
That was a little sore on the second last cut, because all the weight of the frame was hanging off that 1 wire. But once he got it off it felt fine, if a little strange.
The next stage was to clean the pins and surrounding area with betadine solution, and then to give me laughing gas before pulling the pins out. As you can see in the following video, I never quite got the laughing gas!
The pins just about fell out! I was expecting a lot more resistance, and I guess the doctor was too!
I apologise for the lack of gore, blood, and pain. I felt a bit let down myself actually!
Here is a closer view of the holes after the pin removal:
And a better look at the entire frame after getting the bottom part removed:
So that was it! The frame was removed! As you can see the main parts took less than 2 minutes in total. Well worth the 525 mile round trip! I could have done it myself at home instead, lol.
When I got out of hospital there was a bunny on the grass in front of the car where we parked.
The next day, I took off the little dressings they had put over the holes in my foot. You can see how little blood there was.
I have to keep my foot pulled up, and tied onto the frame with something, to stop my foot dropping and developing something called "claw toe".
I was pretty desperate to get a sock and a shoe on and see how that was. I hadn’t been able to wear one for over 6 months and I am sick of looking at my ugly foot! After some masterful skill with a sock and my handy pocket knife, I had butchered a regular sock to transform it into an ankle sock, or trainer sock. I then turned my room upside down trying to find a right shoe, and laced it up backwards so the ends of the laces was coming from the front (so that I could tie the shoelaces to the frame to pull my foot up).
Here I am with my shoe on!
It makes me feel almost normal again! (If I was ever "normal" to begin with that is!)
As for how the ankle is now that it is free from the frame...
The movement is still very restricted. After being shattered and then immobilised for 6 months it is very stiff, and I will need to work slowly at building up some movement. I can notice an improvement already since getting the frame off, but I think it will be a while before I get anything like a normal range of motion. When it gets to the limit of it’s movement it has an uncomfortable, tight pressure feeling on it. Not painful, just not nice. It feels pretty unstable when I put weight on it as the frame isn’t holding my ankle up anymore, so I also need to work on building up muscle to support the ankle. Before getting the foot frame off I could balance my entire weight through the bad leg, but I don’t think I’ll be trying that for a while yet. But once I’ve got the ankle movement and stability up to scratch, I should be able to burn my crutches and start walking normally again! :D And then the rest of the frame should hopefully be coming off around August/September.
I hope you enjoyed reading the continuation of my story, or if TL;DR, I hope you at least enjoyed looking at the pics/videos!
can’t help thinking that your big toe looks like it has downs.
lmao! Lisk said that he thought it looked like my big toe is angry with the other ones.
I know it looke wierd stiking out like that, but when you don’t wear a shoe for so long your big toe naturally spreads out like that. After wearing a shoe for a bit I noticed it was allready pulling in a bit. I might wrap a bit of bandage around them to pull it in when I’m not wearing my shoe, until it looks normal again.
Thanks for all the good ratings guys! I almost didn’t post this, glad I did though!
Feb 21, 2009 4:52 pm - oh yeah, I meant to say, thanks for the pic...!
Quote:
lol look at UK’s lil fat legs.
Also it looks like you shave UK...strange?
lmao! That’s true, you don’t have the "forest-like hairiness" that I apparently do.
And I know I’m in no position to talk, but you have funny looking toes too!
Feb 22, 2009 5:09 pm - Thought I would leave you some sympathy
I was nourishing that baby over the summer of ’08.
Although your situation is 100 times worse.
5*
Feb 22, 2009 5:18 pm - lol Spook, I couldn’t even do it to begin with! But i was watching a video a few months ago of some chinese guy doint it, he was fucking amazing. Made me wish I hadn’t fucked my ankle so that I could start practicing, lol.
And candlemasscade, lol, not a bad idea. There is a bit on the left side just above the scar where two of the pins going into the leg look like eyes, and part of the scar looks like a smiley mouth. I was thinking of taking a pic and using it as my avatar, lol.
Poisonblast - Fucking hell dude, that is some lump! Were you growing a baby in there? lol. What did you do to it? (the leg, not the baby, lol)
Feb 22, 2009 5:29 pm - When people ask me I got into a tussle with a bear ;)
But the real story is my ankle got caught in a rut on an unraked baseball field after i hit a ball into the outfield and well, all my weight came down onto it. Torn up nerve endings, non-displaced fracture, soft tissue damage, and thats all just from twisting an ankle. I still can’t feel anything on the side of my foot (Oh and I didn’t sign up this baseball season).
Feb 23, 2009 2:59 pm - Here you go candlemasscade, I used your idea for a smiley along with my own idea and made this nice new avatar!
poisonblast, yikes, that sounds pretty nasty! I don’t blame you for not signing up this year, lol.
And mutton-chop, a chicken wing foot? lol, that’s a new one. It is a bit monged looking since the accident, but even after a few days of being pin-free and wearing a shoe I can see it’s allready beginning to go back to a more normal shape.
Feb 23, 2009 5:10 pm - Damn, see what happens to an egg when it is the highest rated on the site stats? Someone rates it down to 2.6 stars just to be a dick.
I wish people that vote low weren’t so fucking pussy and would comment to say why, if there is a genuine reason.
was me, the reason being is because i like to see how bad i can rape the rating. =)
Well thanks for admiting it, but that’s a pretty dickish thing to do.
Quote:
That’s your new nicknmae btw. chicken wing. Then you can change your name to kickin’ ass, I would.
Joe Dirt fuckin’ rules.
Damn, I’ve just made a new avatar otherwise I might have inserted "wing" into my old one. It said Chicken Coopz, I could have made it Chicken Wing Coopz. lol
