I live in Tuscaloosa County,Alabama. In a nearby city called Northport, there is an old abandoned mental institution called Bryce Hospital. One night, me and some of my friends, went to go explore the old institution. When you first drive up to the old hospital, you feel as if your in an old horror movie. It’s the typical scary scene,at the entrance to the building above the door some previous visitors have written WELCOME TO HELL, in spray paint. We alldecide to go ahead and go inside the old hospital. We first get in and it is pitch black, so we were very thankful for our flashlights. We decided to go to the second floor were the patient rooms begin. We checked in every room for any homeless people because they are known to stop by the old hospital. We cleared the second level of the building,we go on to the third level and do the same, checking every room for any life.Me and my buddys decide we should go down to the basement and do some exploring. We go down the stairs to the basement and I notice something wet on my feet.I look down and were going into water and it gets deeper as we get farther down the staircase. We finally get down to the basement and were ankle high in water. So we werent too high in the water. As we’re walking through the basement we are running across beer bottles and broken glass.I glance into the corner of the basement and i see an old table, and i believed it was one of the old tables the used for surgery on the brain. In the old days it was believed that if your put a rod in the brain it would cure the mental illness. So we went and checked out the table and indeed it was one of the old surgeons tables. So, i thought it would be cool to strap myself in to the table.Well as soon as i strapped myself into the surgeons table we heard someone running into the beer bottles in the room next to us,so we were frantically trying to find a way out of the basement there was only one way out that we saw and it was blocked off with metal bars.Luckily we found a fire escape and we ran until we got back to the car,and when we got back to the car we searched under it and inside it just checking for anyone who might be hiding.
Well I hope you liked my story of Old Bryce Hospital!
I have pictures but unfortunately they’re not digital so i could not post them, next time I’ll make sure i use the digital camera!

Nov 27, 2004 10:02 pm - Someone is Confused!!
Speaking as a former resident of Bryce Hospital I can say without a doubt that our friend here is a little confused. Bryce Hospital has been located in the same place since 1860. Northport, although it is a nice little town isn’t where it is. Bryce Hospital is located near the University of Alabama campus. It is also not abandoned in any way. The main building, which used to house the patients, is now used primarily for administrative personnel. I invite the person who wrote this bogus story to live there for over 4 years, as I did. Only then can he speak of such a place. There are no metal bars, no basements. There is a morgue, but isn’t there a morgue at YOUR local hospital? There are photos available of the hospital. Message me for the links to the websites, or Google the hospital yourself...

The person who said that Bryce Hospital isnt located in Northport....you’re right, it’s not. It is in Tuscaloosa Alabama....or close to it...and it is nowhere near the University of Alabama. Maybe the new one is...but this is an old abandoned hopsital...I know because my stepkids live in Tuscaloosa and they took me there one night while their father and I were visiting. I’m sure street signs showing where it is at don’t lie. So I believe it is YOU who doesn’t k now what you are talking about. Scott...the original poster of this subject...I believe everything you say about this hospital...my youngest step daughter walked thru it with their friends ....Now the person who said they lived there 4 years?? well...my step-kids have lived there most of their lives...and u are totally mistaken about the location of the OLD Bryce Hospital.

Okay, enough of this back and forth battle its time for a quick history lesson. First of all when your father worked for Bryce hospital for 30 years and you spent all your life growing up in and around Bryce you tend to learn a little bit of history.

Okay lets start with the "Old Bryce" in Northport. The land that it sits on was donated by a fmaily known by Geminson, that big creepy building everyone refers to as "Old Bryce" is actually call (Jemison Building), it was the first building to be built on that lot. The smaller building about 30 yards from Jemison is a gaurd shack, its not important, but that other creepy building way on the other side of the land is called "S.D. Allen", it was nursing home. It was shut down (circa 2000-01), Jemison was shut down (circa 1962). That whole land is called S.D. Allen.

Now onto the other Bryce Hospital (the ONLY Bryce Hospital, the REAL Bryce Hospital). This one is the older big brother of the "Old Bryce", it got its name from the first superintendant Peter Bryce, whom is buried on the front lawn on Bryce Hospital.

The land was purchased in 1852 from Robert Ellyson (326 acres). Construction began in the Spring of 1853. July 19, 1856 Trustees advise that a superintendant be hired to supervise completion of the building. On Dec. 30, 1859 Peter Bryce submits application for the position (getting hired on 7/6/1860). Nine years after construction had begun, it was finished on (7/6/1881).

August 14, 1892, Dr. Bryce dies of Bright’s disease. Served 32 years as superintendant.

(If you would like a copy of the history, send me an email @ chubster20@hotmail.com, title the subject "Bryce History Request".)

Feb 19, 2005 4:17 pm - ....Im back
Hey guys, sorry for the absence, its been a long time since i made my way back here, mostly b/c I forgot my password lol. Anyways, I am no longer taking requests for the Bryce info, I got alot of emails and it became more of a job than something cool to do.

Um havent been out to Bryce in a while, the last time I went was Jan. 1st, that was the night before my best friend was to return to the Army after exodus so we had to hit up the old building one last time, and I actually made a quick stop out there like two nights ago, first time since 1/1. As some of you may know back on Dec. 23rd the building went up in flames, as the rumours go it was an electrical fire, I went by there on the 26th of that same month and there was a huge power pole knocked over, um whether or not I wanna believe it was an electrical fire or just straight up arson is two different stories, but either way the place is ruined as isnt really that cool of a place anymore, umm it doesnt look like the place has had that much activity since then, due to the flames the entire roof is gone which back in late Dec./early Jan. led to the entire third floor being covered with a thick sheet of ice from the rain and freezing air. It just wasnt safe there.

Now the place stays damp and has started to pick up quite an odor from the water. Like I said this place has truely become abandonned now, the other day it looked like there was no activity there for weeks, however I did notice some newly blazed mattress’ thrown out.

But I just wanted to say that for all those that requested a copy of the info, Im sorry I couldnt fill all your requests, I appreciate your interest. But it looks like its time for me to retire "Old Bryce" as one of my hangouts.

Okay so I went back to Bryce here and there and I got some pictures from a few trips, and well here they are. Now dont steal them or I will come find you and jab a phillips head screw driver in your throat and watch you gasp for breath whilst I piss of your flinching body.

Other than that, please enjoy.

Note: These pictures are huge and there are quite a few of them. SO loading time may take a while, so please by all means go enjoy your day. Have a snack, play with your dog, kick a newborn baby in the face, uhh forget I said that last one. But at any rate, I hope you enjoy them.

Sep 17, 2005 3:10 am - Call Bryce Hospital
I dont know how to tell all of the informed fools this, but... what is often referred to as "the Old Bryce Hospital" is ACTUALLY the newer of the two Bryce Hospital locations. The first and original Bryce Hospital, built in 1861 is still in use to this day. The location often referred to as "The Old Bryce" was only constructed in the late 1940s- Early 1950s. It may look as though it has sat there rotting for a hundred years... but it was actually still being used as of the 1970s. I hate to disalusion allyou folks, but as a Tuscaloosa county Historian, I felt it my duty. If you still don’t believe me, call Bryce Hospital and ask for a brochure, ect telling the basic history of the Hospital. Do your research.

Jan 19, 2006 3:55 pm - bryce ghost sighting
hey man i dont know if you answer emails anymore but this story is kind of crazy. Me and 3 other friends visited old bryce last night at about 12. We didnt make it to actual bryce, we went to S.D. Allen. As we approched the building one of my friends felt chills, one could smell a foul oder, and we all heard creepy noises like doors were opening or people were walking. There were light reflections in the windows that didnt appear to come from anywhere. We were too creeped out to go inside so we all agreed to touch the building and leave. After touching the wall we all started to run for no reason. We looked back and saw a white figure, wearing what looked like a hospital gown. It had kind of a staggered walk and right as i turned to run i saw it turn and look at us. All 4 of us saw the thing and know that we would have heard it if it was a person creeping up on us or something. Just thinking about it gives me the chills.

No man I dont bother with emails anymore, I usually get crap like spam so I dont bother, I made the mistake and gave out my email here and there about Bryce and my inbox got flooded by request, I dont recommend doing that for anything.

As for Bryce, man if you believe it then I cant deny it, I could sit here and call you a liar but if you saw something hey more power to you, I used to go out there like to the point where it became sad how often I was there and I never saw anything. Hell just the thought of Bryce pisses me off so it is kinda funny and hyprocitical for me to even post here now, but anyways what is that saying about pickers cant be choosers? Yeah I dont know myself.

Like I said I would go out there on a nightly basis before the fire but it became like once every three months afterwards. To be honest the Northport police (whom I am good friends with the night crew) brag that it was myself and my friend that set it on fire. I have my beliefs on who it could be but once again I am getting off my story.

I could go in that place without a flashlight, without a second person, hell give me something to sleep on and its goodnight Irene. The smell, well I agree with you it does smell like two quarts of piss in S.D. but almost five years of rain water in a enclosed place will turn anything into a mildew smelling place. The noises, well man to be honest I have never been spooked out there by noises except twice.

#1 - In S.D. Allen it was me and two of my friends, no one else was in SD except us. We were on the back hallway and around the corner is a few bathrooms, it was quite inside when all the sudden we heard one of those porclein (sp?) sinks shatter. And like I said no one else was inside, we searched the entire place beforehand. When we heard that we bolted. Mind you this was like our second time ever out there and since then I have probably surpassed 150 trips. Sad but true.

#2 - Year or so later it was me, my cousin, and my friend. We got bored since NOBODY ever goes out there anymore, so we decided to leave. As we were leaving around the back I heard a weedeater or chainsaw, so I headed around to check it out and when I got back there a brief blast of heavy metal began playing. I mean like .03 seconds worth. Yeah so we got the hell out of there that night in a hurry too.

Those are the only two times I was scared, but like I said you give me a (clean) matress and a pillow and I will spend the night if need be.

Sep 14, 2006 11:26 pm - thanks!
those are great pictures - thanks for reposting them. I’ve always heard of that place, but never have seen it. Where in Northport is it, anyway? There’s Jemison stuff all over the place. They’ll probably sell it for condos any day now...

Sep 22, 2006 12:18 am - Location
Bryce is on a back road (dont know the name) get on 82 and go past Northport Walmart til you see a BP station on the right. To your left you will see a church with a heart and three crosses on it (its been awhile since I went out there but I think the chruch is called Trinity Baptist). We always parked at the church and took the dirt road to Bryce.

It getting cold now I will probably check it out more, I love going out there when its cold. I dunno why but I just do.

Oct 28, 2006 2:41 pm - Directions...
Hi... I’m new to this thing so bare with me. I was wondering if someone could give me la-jit directions to Bryce’s. I’ve been wanting to go but I can’t find exactly where it is... and since I live hours away from Tuscaloosa, I didn’t want to drive all the way up there for no reason. If anyone near there could send me directions here real soon. I would be highly greatful. Also, I don’t know the whole story on the "Old Bryce" place. Is there anyone out there that could help me out on that?! Thankx...

Nov 17, 2006 9:49 pm - Wow
Two people that havent emailed me wanting to know about the place. Hell you two probably already have, I get emails about Bryce all the time.

Jen I think I already spoke to you a couple of times so I will hold off on your question.

To the first person however, I would need to know where exactly you live to give you directions. But anyways since I dont I can help out a little. Okay if you know how to get to T-town then good, we will start from there.

Okay, if you start on Highway 82 going towards Pickens County you will go past Northport Walmart til you come to the new 84 lumber, you can park there and take the dirt road on the right to get to Bryce. Just walk the dirt road and you will end up on the property. You should know Highway 82 in you live in Alabama, and there is no denying the sight of 84 as its friggin huge. So that is the easiest direction.

The other direction is fuzzy for me, but if you go near the N’port Airport you take the back road (dont know the name of that road) turn left and take 5th street. As you follow this street you will come up on the front entrance, you will see signs reading "S.D. Allen Mental Facility".

Your best bet...take Highway 82, and park at 84 lumber or drive slightly up the road and turn on 5th street.

Dec 14, 2006 2:03 pm - Interesting.
I’ve been sitting here all day @ work reading things about Bryce. I want to find the old Bryce so bad! I’m hoping I will be able to soon.

While talking to my mom about how interested i am in mental hospitals and insane asylums she informs me that my great uncle was in bryce for quite some time. WOW. it’s amazing the things you find out once you open the can of worms.

Has anyone else from here been to Bryce going on Donalds directions? Did you get lost? Any extra things you want to throw in?

Do you guys know if the "new bryce" or rather the one that is still open and has patients... do you think they will let people come in and tour the building?

Feb 17, 2007 12:10 am - grandmother at Bryce
My late grandmother who lived in Cullman, AL was in & out of Bryce for years. My uncle who is about 80 yrs. old now was born there. I remember as a child visiting her at home and my grandfather complaining that he couldn’t keep any knives in the house - not even a butter knife - because of her phobia. Also he had to constantly buy underwear for her because they disappeared all the time. I think she probably flushed them down the toilet. As a child of about 6 or 7 yrs. I remember my grandfather holding me upside down by the ankles over the toilet and flushing it while laughing pretending that he was going to flush me down. I think I’m pretty normal or at least I pretend to be. I think.
