My friend did this awhile back and I just recently figured out how to do it and I love it! A handful of people have asked me to make them a pair after wearing them around for only a day. In this egg I will show you how to make a spiral hemp necklace braid around any headphones, I think it looks sweet, and it slightly strengthens your headphones.

What you need.

-Headphones.

-Hemp, approx. 80 ft. (about 17 arm lengths, yes I know it’s a lot) for stock ipod headphones. (Adjust lengths to fit your headphones)

-Scissors.

-A lot of time (about 5 hours if you’re fast).

Start with about 30 ft of hemp; touch the tips of both ends dividing it in half. Hold onto the two ends and slide your fingers down to the other end as far as your arms will let you, then with the hand that was holding the two ends grab where you stretched it to and continue till you have a loop. You do this so that each side of the hemp will be even when you get to the loop (you will use this method later on as well). This is the hemp for the longest cord, just to let you know for your color scheme.

Take the loop that you just got with your 30ft. of hemp and place it by the plug in side of your headphones underneath the cord. You will start your tying here, be sure to press your first knots tightly against the plastic by the plug so that when you’re done your spirals will cover the whole cord.

Now start to tie a spiral hemp braid around your headphones starting at the plastic by the plug, if your not sure how to tie hemp my bud Captainpiles has a good egg on how to here http://www.rotteneggs.com/r3/show/se/220482.html.

In his egg he shows how to tie the same knot you will be repetitively using in mine, the only difference is he tapes down his project to a table, and obviously instead of hemp for the center we are using headphones. I suppose you could tape down the headphones but I find it’s easiest to just hold it while you work. It is fairly confusing at first if you have never made a bracelet/necklace before. And if you have, this is still difficult because you are working with such a large amount of hemp and it has a tendency to knot and tangle easily, but it gets better when you get further along and the hemp isn’t so long. Do not get discouraged when you get knots and messes, don’t try to force it just stop where you are and undo the error. You should get the hang of it after awhile.

Continue to tie until you get to where the headphones split, and you’re already done with the longest part! I cut off that gay little sliding thing that most headphones have because it only gets in the way.

Tie about 5 knots up one of the cords leading up to the ear buds, it doesn’t matter what one you choose. And then tie off both of the strings so they don’t untangle.

Now cut off a new strand of hemp 25 ft long (approx. 5-6 arms lengths). Divide this in half using the same method I used for the first part, keeping it even on each side of the loop you will get as a result of this. Start tying this section just like you did with the first section, but start 1-2 spirals above those 5 knots you tied up one of the cords of your choice. This will make the transition of hemp look nicer.

Continue to tie the spiral knot until you reach the ear bud, you can stop about 2 knots short of the plastic of your ear buds so that the hemp does not make them stiff and hard to move when they are in your ears. I usually use a different color for each section (3 sections in all) but that’s your choice.

Once you tie your knots as close as your going to get to the plastic of your ear buds, tie tight knots on the strings you have been using to make your spirals so the knot hugs your spiral (this will stop it from untangling), cut off excess hemp at the knots you just tied. (BE SURE to tie it off the 2 pieces of hemp you have been using this whole time or it will unravel and you will cry).

Repeat the last step on the other cord, the only difference is that you start on the actual headphone cord instead of a hemp spiral. And now about 6 hours laterBOOSH your hemp headphones are complete.

*I really want to do this with Rasta colored hemp on those big Rasta skull candy headphones. If anyone does this show me*

But wouldn’t this make the headphones really heavy and make them come out of your ears too much. I had the same JVC Gummy headphones as you, just in black.

well they are slightly heavier, but because you only use two strands of hemp to tie it, it doesnt add that much weight, and about them falling out it depends on how good headphones stay in your ears i guess i dont get the problem of them falling out and i go running with them.

ha and ya those pink ones i used in the egg were for a friend thats a girl im not a fag haha. but she says she likes them alot so i would go for it with those headphones.

That’s not really a "hemp" knot. It’s a standard Macrame knot. I know this because as a child back in the 70’s Macrame plant hangers were all the rage. I took a class at the local library on how to make that knot and many many more. I also used to make keychains out of leather by square braiding. That’s my favorite knot.

just like the first way you start, place the loop underneath the cord/hemp and start to tie. its actually quite simple :]
