Pure Sodium explodes in Water, so have fun and dont get ur hand blown off. It also Burns through stuff so store or keep in somthing Metallic

TO make pure sodium u need somthing really hott. Hotter than ur stove, unless u have a gas stove or one that can get really hot. Put table salt on a stove glass pan or a metallic pan. Now heat as hot as u can untill the table salt melts. Now run an electric current through it (having a car battery and attaching wires to the two positive and negative ends of the battery, put the other ends of the cords into the melted salt) now when u run the electric current through it, it will give off gas. (DO NOT BREATHE IN THE GAS, IT IS PURE CHLORINE AND YOU WILL !!DIE!!)) after a couple minutes stop the electric current and pour the contents into a metal dish. let dry. u know have pure sodium. dont blow ur arm off, if u through it in water, through from a distance and run.

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU KILLING URSELF. HANDLE THIS WITH CAUTION. PURE SODIUM CAN BURN THROUGH SKIN, DO NOT MELT UR HAND OFF EITHER.

Hey guys you do realise there is a beter way of making sodium just use sodium hydroxide and use similar method and it melts at a lower temp oh and to add you dont let of a gas that the germans used to kill people in the WW’s

Alright I’m a Chemist and I just wanted to let you guys know that this isn’t going to work, even if you have a gas stove. All the steps are correct but the but the fact that the melting point of NaCl (your table salt) is about 1070K (~1345C) and your typical home range will never be able to reach the melting point. You would be better off using an acetylene torch to melt the stuff. Not only will that be a problem, even after quite a long time of running electricity through the melted NaCl (that process is called "electrolysis"& 41; there is still the problem that there will only be a small amount of actual Na on the anode and since Na is such a highly reactive Alkali Metal it will immedialtely start to react with the moisture in the air, leaving you with no time at all to actually play with the Na (FYI, Na can be stored in any oil that doesn’t contain water.) Just thought I would fill you in on the reality of the matter. And if you do actually manage to melt the NaCl, screw playing with the Sodium, figure out a way to capture the highly poisonous Chlorine gas that is emitted. That will be way more fun!

I was unsuccessful in my endeavors to successfully complete this undertaking. The issue of heating the NaCl to the melting point was not a real problem--holding a propane torch to the salt for 20 seconds or so was enough to melt a fair bit of it. More of an issue, however, is getting it to stay in a liquid state long enough to perform electrolysis. As soon as I let up on the propane torch, the salt would freeze just as my brother would get the wires into it. We probably also didn’t have a strong enough power source to perform electrolysis (I had a gut feeling from the start that 2 9-Volts wouldn’t cut it). As for the chlorine, well, we never really got to that stage, but we figured a fan would be effective in dissipating the fumes (this experiment was performed outdoors for safety measures). If someone really wanted to try this, I would advise using a car battery and heavy duty wires and torch. Supervision of a professional would also be a good idea.
