Often, dumpsters have locks on them to prevent homeless people from chowing down on the contents. This is inconvenient if you’re looking for a free meal, want to set the trash on fire, or scatter it about.

The lock is usually some sort of rod on the leading end of the dumpster lid. However, hinge on the back end of the lid is simple to defeat.

You might need pliers, but I can usually do without. One end of the iron hinge rod has a washer and a pin. Simply straighten the pin, then remove it. Remove the washer. Pull the rod out from the other side. The dumpster lids are now removed. The rest is up you you.
