Alright guys I haven’t done an exploration egg for years, and recently I’ve been on a trip to northern New South Wales (Australia)
While staying at my uncles farm, I have found a number of great places to explore
Including explorer camps (From the early explorers that navigated Australia) even caves where aboriginals used to camp in and have left carvings in the rocks
These will all be included in eggs in the near future but right now I’m going to share with you an abandoned tobacco farm that my dad and I found.
We decided to explore the other side of the river we usually fish from, so we grabbed a canoe and ventured down the river
I took a few photos of interesting rock formations & a cool looking tree
We then docked our vessel on a sandy bank and walked up the ledge onto flat ground
I spotted a kangaroo hopping in the distance
Just behind those bushes we could see a few buildings in the distance. A good 15 minute walk and we arrived.
The first building we came to appeared to be a small cottage, where the tobacco farmers slept.
Opposite it was another structure which my dad believes used to support a rainwater tank
Underneath it we found a lot of metal caps & tins.
These must have been used in the tobacco making process (any know about them? comment below please)
We moved onto the main building, which was the tobacco barn. Where they both stored and hung the tobacco to dry.
There was a main entrance that led into a hallway with two separate rooms.
On the door way there are various numbers and other writing. My dad believes they are batch numbers for the tobacco.
In the first room there was a huge hole broken through the brick wall, and other various objects and junk.
You can see where they used to hang the racks of tobacco to dry on the rafters in the roof.
The second room was empty and contained nothing special so we moved outside to the opposite side of the house.
Outside we found a dunny aka. toilet
And near it were the foundations, piping and other remains of a house, quite possibly burnt down.
That was about all that was left worth taking pictures of, we then returned to our canoe and paddled back upstream.
Some of you might be wondering ‘how did you know it was a tobacco farm?’
Well, my father grew up in those years when they used to farm tobacco, and that area was well known locally for its tobacco crops.
We have also spotted another tobacco farm just north of where we went hiking today so we might head over there soon and i’ll probably post any decent pictures onto the comments below.
Sep 24, 2009 9:06 am - This is really cool! Great pictures. It looks like you had a good time.
My relatives who live in North Carolina (USA) are tobacco farmers. I didn’t even realize tobacco will grow well in Aus! I thought it’s too dry there, so this is a surprise.
epic pagestretch good egg... but i only read half of it cause the rest was off the page
yeah sorry about the page stretch
I have no programs on this computer (not my own pc) that will let me resize
and i couldn’t see where photobucket would let me resize without posting them as thumbnails.
and i couldnt be fucked uploading them on imageshack
so yeah have to deal with it guys. just highlight the text or something lol :)
Sep 24, 2009 7:02 pm - Go into Photobucket. Click the thumbnail of the image you want to resize. Then mouse over the large image. At the top of the image, you should see several options including ’resize’. Mouse over resize and it should show you common size options. Might not work on a Mac, but I think it does. I dunno.
As for the Egg... I now want to move to Aus. Nice. 5*
Moar plz.
