Back in the day, near Riverside Drive, by the Aquarius theater in Austin, was Sportspark. It was a cool place, with the batting cages, miniature golf, a 2-story video arcade, and roller skating, and some $hitty stores. Riversde drive is a danerous place, but Sportpark was thriving. Until one day, that is, when the employees showed up and found padlocks on the gates. The owners had skipped town, and left EVERYTHING behind.
Years later, I got to visit Sportspark again. The place had been #*@!ing trashed by then. The pitching machines in the batting cages were long gone, but someone got the cash registers, pummeled them with baseball bats, taken the contents, and left the pieces of cash register behind. The fiberglass creatures on the miniature golf course were knocked over and dismembered. The video game pavillion, built like an old, two-story Victorian house, comtained literally dozens of video games in various states of disrepair, some with smashed glass, others broken to bloody bits, and others burned beyond recognition. Speaking of burned, someone torched the building that housed the roller skating rink, but not before lifting the stereo equipment contained within. The bathrooms contained more of the same, with porcelain toilets smashed up with putters from the miniatire golf shack. The city finally got around to bulldozing the rest of the place, what what a place it was. |
