As many of you are probably aware, Pyrodex is a Black Powder substitute that, when exposed to heat, burns very quickly. Obviously this substance has the potential to be used as an explosive, as if it did not have that potential it could not be used in antique firearms. It is obviously not the most effective explosive, but as it does not require any license, you will not be under any suspicion.
W to buy Pyrodex?
Pyrodex is widely available, and in many cases you may be able to purchase it in your local Wal-Mart or other such store. A local gun shop will almost certainly sell it. I am not too sure about the requirements for purchasing it, though I should imagine that no license is required.
Ho to Use Pyrodex as an Explosive?
P can be used an explosive in much the same way as it is used in firearms, except you need to greatly increase the pressure. One of the main ways (if indeed the only way) which you can do this is to have a very small ’escape’ for the gas in relation to the amount of Pyrodex that is being ignited. This can be achieved quite simply, by using a container which has a small neck but a large capacity.
A prime example of this would be an empty CO2 capsule that are used in many bb guns(you may need to drill the hole a little wider). The amount of Pyrodex that can fit into a capsule is quite considerable, and when the hole is only 2-5mm wide, it certainly creates quite an explosion, and throws shrapnel, if your into that sort of thing.
One of the main dilemmas faced when attempting to blow things up in this fasion is the question of ignition. Obviously, using a fuse used in fireworks (if you wish to search on the internet or ask in a shop ask for ’plastic igniter cord’ or simply ’igniter cord’ makes you look like you know what your talking about) would be ideal, however in many instances this is not available. I have dabbled in a number of fuses but have found that none is more effective that pyrodex itself. Once I have filled the hole I intend to blow up, I leave a thin trail of Pyrodex (no more than 5mm width is required)from the hole to a safe distance. A sensible idea would be to have something which provides a degree of shelter close by, if so, no more than 20 cm of Pyrodex should be required, as I can move 30 or so feet away and still see my explosion in this time. Simply light the trail and move! Note: It may be an idea to leave a small heap of pyrodex upon the entrance to the hole.
Possib Ideas:
As previously suggested, one of the best explosions I have achieved was using a depleted C02 capsule. Simply drill, or use a nail to make the hole big enough to allow pyrodex to go in reasonably easy, but not so big as to allow the gas an easy escape, no more than 5mm in diameter. Ignite an take cover to avoid a face full of metal! (Note: This has to be the LOUDEST thing I have ever heard! I was only 6 feet away when I did this, my ears were ringing for days)
A large block of wood is also fun to use. Take a drill and drill 4 or 5 holes about 4/5ths of the way through the wood. Make sure all the holes join to form one big hole. The larger the better. Then turn the block over and drill a very thin hole on the other side, making sure that it connects with the larger hole. Take some tape and place it over the small hole, then turn the block back over. Fill the hole with Pyrodex, then when it is packed full, securely tape over that hole making sure no Pyrodex falls out. The turn the block back over and take the tape off the small hole. Usually the Pyrodex will not be up to the brim of the small hole, so add a little more. It might be a good idea to place breeze blocks or other weights on the wooden block to stop it simply flipping over. Then lay a trail of Pyrodex/place your fuse in the hole and light. This thing blows up well. I managed to split a block that must have weight 15lbs using about an ounce of Pyrodex. Just make sure the small hole is really tiny.
Anyway, thanks for reading all of this. Have fun, blowing stuff up is one of the most exciting and enjoyable things I can think of! But make sure you and your surroundings are safe.
