So you want to be a pickpocket but don’t know how. Well I could go in to detail at length trying to describe the do’s and don’ts, but we’ll start with something simple and that’s the snatch theft. This is the happy “gray area” of petty larceny, where pickpocketing and purse snatching over lap each other. All you need for snatch theft is a simple distraction (often already supplied for you), a mark (i.e.: your “victim”), and just a few seconds to make your move. Don’t feel guilty or sorry stealing, had they watched their belongings better that fat wallet would still be in their pocket instead of yours. It’s just business, not personal. But then again if you are reading this you’ve either stolen something already or plan on doing so in the near future so hey no worries.
So where do you begin? That’s a simple one; you start with your mark. Since this is a simple snatch you don’t want to go for a tightly clasped purse or buttoned back pocket, you want to go for a “sheep”, which is to say a person who has left themselves wide open for your probing hands. There are plenty of sheep just waiting to be fleeced; all you have to do is keep your eyes open.
What To Look For
    - A woman who drapes her purse on the back of a chair or on the floor beside of her. Out of Sight, Out of Mind- A man who’s wallet is sticking out above the lip of his back pocket
    - A woman who’s wallet is sticking out of her purse
    - A woman who leaves her purse or wallet in a shopping cart
    - A purse or book bag left in an unlocked car
    - A man or woman who has set their wallet down on a table or counter
    - Someone asleep at a hospital, bus stop, or in car
    - A purse or laptop sitting beside a woman on a bench
    - Purses left in unattended offices or dressing rooms
    - Purses and coats dangling on coat racks
    - And any thing else you might find…

As you’ve probably noticed women are targeted a lot more than men in snatch theft. This is the same in any type of petty larceny for the simple reason that a woman’s wallet is not always in contact with her body, or even in her sight. This being the case, its no wonder women get robbed more than men for the very basic fact that it’s easier. Even when she has the purse over her shoulder its usually just a simple task to remove the wallet from the bag. The best target for this sort of thing, same as in type of larceny, is a woman alone with a dangling purse or one she is paying much attention to.
A simple snatch isn’t difficult to set up; the hard part is the waiting involved. Since you aren’t employing any special means to relieve your mark of his or her wallet then you just have to wait for the right moment to seize your prize. But this won’t take very long; believe me, because as P.T. Barnum said there’s a sucker born every minute. Depending on where you do your snatch you might want to scout out the quickest escape routes, especially if you are into snatch and run. However you shouldn’t haunt a particular area if you are going to snatch and run, seeing that people will begin to recognize you, unless of course it’s an extremely busy area. The best thing about snatch theft is that it can happen anywhere.
But there are some rules, or at least simple guidelines, for this sort of thing. They aren’t as detailed as a set for pickpocketing, but then again snatch theft isn’t that deeply detailed of a theft.
GUIDELINES

    · Don’t stick out: be sure to blend in to your surroundings. If you are dressed funny or are acting strange people will be on guard or might remember you. The key here is to be able to strike when your mark is off guard.
    · Keep your eyes open and stay alert, opportunities abound.
    · Try not to be obvious, like don’t stare and gape at a purse.
    · Depending on whether you’re a male or female making a snatch can be different, seeing as how a woman just picking up a purse isn’t so odd if you didn’t see that she didn’t come in with it. Otherwise carry a bag or coat over your arm to hide the goods in.
    · Don’t take more than you can carry, but if you don’t have the time just grab the purse, briefcase, etc. and go.
    · Wear comfortable clothing just incase you have to run.

RULES

    · There are three different kinds of snatch theft, Snatch and Run, Dip and Lift, and Sneak and Stash.
    · Snatch and Run: Boiled down to basics you can just grab the purse from your mark and run off with it. Simple, effective, and not very creative. This is the most recognizable version of snatch theft; known at large as purse snatching. This is for are more daring friends out there and I’ll cover it more in detail later.
    · Dip and Lift: This is very simple pickpocketing, done largely when the marks pocket or purse is open wide to the world and anyone could steal the wallet.
    · Sneak and Stash: This is also a form of pickpocketing; more commonly know to the world and sneak thieving or opportunistic pickpocketing.

Now that we have the basic rules down lets move on to what you should be looking for. We’ve all seen the woman who leaves her purse in her car, or unattended in the grocery store, and the men who puts his wallet in his jacket pocket or in a baggy back pocket so wide you could stick your whole hand in. But going back to the woman in the grocery store, well there are several ways to help her redistribute the wealth.
The most common scenario involving a grocery store, or any store for that matter, is as follows; you see a woman checking out something in the isle, completely turning her back on the purse that is temptingly sitting there in her shopping cart. While she is distracted by whatever she is looking at there is a time to strike, either taking just the wallet or by jacking the whole bag. Just taking the wallet gives you time to use her cards in the very store you stole the wallet in since she doesn’t know her wallet is gone. Just taking the wallet gives you more time to get away, but ups the risk of you being seen when you could just slip the purse under your coat and go out the door.
