Dec 30, 2004 11:56 pm - Yep. It’s the same concept as laying a quarter on a 9-volt battery and getting people to pick it up. By shorting the battery(making a circuit with basically no resistance) there is a high current and voltage flowing through the circuit. This makes a great deal of heat.

Jan 06, 2005 5:29 pm - You can do the same thing with pencil lead. I just put 2 wires into an extension cord and plugged it in. This could be safer that a car battery if there is a switch to your outlet. I had one because it was hooked up to one of the surge protector multi-outlets.

Feb 27, 2005 9:33 am - Pretty good, and even though it’s pathetically simple it works. ya know how to start a fire real easy? A bit if steel wool (the scratchy stuff you use to clean dishes) and a 9-V. Just touch the wool to the connections... it sparks a hell of a lot instantly, and will melt after a couple of minutes.

Mar 07, 2005 7:11 pm - This shit won’t work. I’ve connected paper clips to the positive and negative sides, and it does get hot, but not hot enough to melt metal. The garage I work at has to have a big machine just to make metal elastic enough to bend.

Also, its a circuit with high resistance that gets hot, not low resistance, dont you know even the fundamentals of electricity? Then again, do you know what fundamentals are? (No its not Bucket Of Paint-8427’s charity...)

Apr 21, 2006 8:16 am - Youd be better off setting a penny between two alligator clips coming off the battery terminals. Steel melts at over 2100 degrees F. New-er pennies are zinc and melt at 600 degrees F. Plus zinc lets off a toxic gas when it melts. I wonder if you can set a penny on a 9 volt, melt that, and release a small toxic cloud of noxious gas. Set the whole thing up in a desk drawer and the person opening it gets a face full of carcinogenic fumes. hehe Just a thought
