The 5 horsepower Briggs and stratton is a very popular small engine commonly used on go-karts. They are also used on racing karts. There are many hop up parts for these engines. However there are some ways to hop these engines up without buyinh anything. The two most effective things I have don to my 5 horse is I took the governor out, the engines power will not be governed, do not keep the throttle down for long periods of time or the engine will break something. Another way to make your work look more professional is remove the oil flipper deal and tap the hole out and thread it and screw a bolt through it. Be sure to take all of the governor parts out or they will fall off and get caught in the engine’s internals. Another power adding technique is to take the bottom oil scraper ring off. The engine will smoke more and burn just a tiny bit more oil but the power you get is worth it. You can also go fast for cheap a way to do this is get a straight pipe. They cost about ten dollars from certain catalogs unless you get a bugle style one. If you have an old style carburetor you can get a cone style air filter. You have to get an adapter for the airfilter. Most of them have a rolled lip for smoother air flow. Just make sure that when you are done you put a rag in the straight pipe so the valves do not warp. Now your engine is inhaling and exhaling more smoothly. I have tested these parts and techniques on my go kart and it is running much better. But if you want to go really fast you can get performance pistons, cams, and cranks, and of course you can bore it out to about .20 over. There is also the Briggs and Stratton Raptor 3 package that already is race ready. This kit is around 300 dollars.
