ok... so today I’ll be teaching you all how to make Thermite... this was already discussed on the Pyros group forum but it’ll be known to the masses now...

ok so first... some of you might be wondering "what the heck is thermite!?" though I believe that the members of this site get around a bit ;)...
ok so thermite is basically a mixture of two very simple materials... Iron Oxide (a.k.a Rust/ferric oxide. yes, common rust.) and some aluminum powder... the products combined form a very volatile heat source, that when lit, can melt through just about anything... that is with the exception of tungsten, but unless you plan on burning a hole through the space shuttle or some wiring in like a furnace or something your not going to have any problems... now I’ve heard that the perfect mixture of this stuff can vaporize carbon steel... I haven’t had the chance to test it on carbon steel yet ;)..... ok so basically this is a powder that when lit will melt through just about anything you want...

now to the process of making this awesome little fiery friend... first your going to need rust... this you can order of ebay (search for iron oxide, or ferric oxide) I have found a big old 1kg jar of iron oxide for about $20... so now that you have your iron oxide your going to need some aluminum shavings or filling that you can grind into a powder, your aluminum has to be at least 94% pure (a aluminum bar or rod from a hardware store is usually the best route, just shave it down and powder it)... now for later your going to need a magnesium ribbon, this you can also get off of ebay or a science store... side note: the iron oxide and the magnesium ribbon will almost always be available in you school science department ;) ask your favorite teacher... the measurements for this is: 8 grams iron oxide to 3 grams aluminum… so anyways, take a cast iron pot and stick it on the stove… stick your iron oxide in and heat it up till its nice and red… then mix in your aluminum... Keep this on the fire for a few seconds then remove and stick it some where to cool… after this is done you might want to make sure and stir it a bit to make sure that the powders stay evenly distributed… so just to let you guys know, this can be stored just about anywhere... Keep it in a box under your bed, a can out in the garage that’s filled with mounds of useless junk, in a jar marked salt and pepper in your spice cabinet ;)...

ok so anyway… I’m sure your all like “get to the point I wanna know how to light this stuff!!!”…. ok so… will use this example (as this was how I heard it for the first time)… so… take a 50 cent piece size pile of this stuff and set it on the hood of your worst enemies car… now to light it… take the magnesium ribbon I mentioned earlier and cut about a inch of it off and stick it in the pile of thermite… now your most likely going to have to light the ribbon with a lighter or a butane torch… though sometimes I’ve heard you must use a propane torch… so anyways…. This is gonna melt right on through the car and into the cement… yeah… you’re gonna have to replace the engine and replace or weld the axle back together...

So there you have it... lol.. Hope I did alright for being a n00b here...

(Sorry to those that have already heard this, and yes I will acknowledge that I first learned this from the anarchists cook book, but I hope this may have made it a slight bit easier to understand, and thanks to Jolly Roger for allowing us the opportunity to learn these great little tricks!)...

This was posted before, but this is a more in-depth article about Thermite. Not bad.

ask your favorite teacher

I stole my magnisium, just picked it up and walked out with it in my pocket. It has been the easyest of the three to get.
