Jan 26, 2008 1:45 pm - Smudging I noticed that whenever a JPEG photo hits the net, it gets pixel raped and it’s quality drops. I wanted to see what could be done to fix the problem. I first opened this photo in GIMP. The quality was so poor that I was having stray pixels interfere with filters. It also just looks bad. First thing I did was add a transparent layer and remove the white background and then save it as a .png file. That took about an hour and left me with "Flame". After that was done, I then used the smudge tool and went all over him with it so that the random pixels were removed. That took about 45 minuets. The final thing I did was use the 3x3 smudge to make the rough rounding of shadows and then went with the 1x1 smudge to smooth it out. ----------What we started with--------------------T e finished product---------- I still have a bit more to do before I can say it’s done. Even though I removed him from the white background, pixel by pixel, the outline is a but choppy however that should be easy to fix. It also seems a little fuzzy but that might be photobucket. Jan 25, 2008 6:39 pm - Ooooh! Shiny! Now that I am messing with lasers again I thought it would be best to pull my focusing element out. I last used it when I was attempting to focus nine laser pens I bought at a dollar store into one large beam and while it did work the diodes were unreliable and eventually failed. After I disassembled it I put on my white gloves and using a silk cloth and a cleaning solution I use on my glasses, I cleaned the main lens up. After it was clean I then put it back in the main housing... ...and then put the whole thing together. Because I’m still looking for a new laser I won’t be using it right now and to protect the lens from dirt I sealed both ends with plastic wrap. This thing is crazy, I got it free (it was $300) and it can do some pretty scary stuff. During the simmer I used it to burn holes in pieces of wood.
