Legal Disclaimer: It is ILLEGAL in the US to pirate movies and you risk jail as well as a fine for doing so. If you choose to pirate a movie, do so at your own risk. This guide is for informational purposes and should only be used legally to make backups of movies you legally own.
I see a lot of people on this site using their precious bandwidth to download movies. You are risking viruses and DVD’s eat up harddrive space like crazy.
Hardware:
1.) A good dual layer DVD burner (I explain why dual layer later). The best burner (I think) is a Plextor because it can read/write many formats including cd-g which is used for karaoke. NEC and Sony are also good. Mad Dog (Sanyo) will work but may require a firmware update which is a pain. Watch for sales at Best Buy, Ciruit City et al in your area. If you can get it for under $60 after rebate you are doing well. Often www.newegg.com has the NEC on sale.
2.) Good DVD-R media. DVD+R may work for some but I couldn’t get it to work right. Again, watch sales ads. I can get spindles of 50 for under $20 after rebate.
3.) You can play these in your computer or you can purchase an inexpensive dvd player at a local store on sale (around $30 US). Make sure it can playback DVD-R!
Software:
1.) DVD Decrypter removes the regional encryption. This process takes a while but is required for some software. http://www.dvddecrypter.com/ 2.) Real DVD’s are almost 9GB. The standard media (not dual layer) is only about 4.7 GB so DVD Shrink http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html enables you to remove items you do want like other languages and special features. It also shrinks it to fit on a regular DVD-R. You can burn the final product using Roxio DVD burning software or NERO which should come bundled with the drive.
3.) Clone DVD is also an excellent tool and a trial download can be found at http://www.topshareware.com/Clone-DVD-download-10576.htm Its only $39 to purchase.
I suggest you buy the dual layer drive for the future. Right now dual layer media is pricey but it will come down and you won’t need to "shrink" your files.
Rent Cheap Movies:
If you have a Blockbuster in your area you can rent unlimited DVD’s (checked out 2 at a time for $14.99 or 1 at a time for $9.99 for the first month). Close the account once the month is up. Blockbuster doesn’t have a centralized computer system so go to another Blockbuster and do it again. Get your friends to do it too and share the account. Make sure you aren’t tempted to burn these movies as it is illegal!
