Cover and Concealment

Note: I recommend that you first read my egg on camouflage and understand it

The prober understanding and application of the principles of cover and concealment used with proper application of camouflage will protect you from enemy observation.

1. Cover is natural or artificial protection from the fire of enemy weapons. Natural cover (ravines, hollows, reverse slopes) and artificial cover (fighting positions, trenches, walls) protect you from flat trajectory fires and partially protect you from high angle fires and the effects of nuclear explosions. Even the smallest depression in the ground and with the proper application can save your life from enemy fire. You must always look for and take advantage of every little bit of cover the terrain offers. By combining this habit with proper movement techniques, he can protect himself from enemy fire. To get protection from enemy fire when moving, he uses routes that put cover between him and the places where the enemy is known or thought to be. You must use natural and artificial cover to keep the enemy from detecting and firing upon you.

2. Concealment is natural or artificial protection from enemy observation. The surroundings may provide natural concealment that needs to change prior to use (bushes, leaves or grass) as concealment with materials such as burlap and camouflage nets, or you can move natural items from their original location. You must consider the effects of the change of seasons on the concealment provided by both natural and artificial materials. The principles of concealment include the following:

Avoid unnecessary movement-

Remain still, movement attracts attention. Your position may be concealed when you remain still, yet easily detected if you move. Your movement against stationary background makes him stand out clearly. When he must change the new position, preferably during limited visibility. You move inches at a time, slowly and cautiously, always scanning ahead for the next position.

Use all available concealment-

(A) Background is important. You must blend with it to prevent detection. The trees, bushes, grass, earth, and man-made structures that form the background vary in color and appearance. This makes it possible for the sniper to blend with them. You need select trees or bushes that blend with your uniform and absorb the outline of your figure. You must always assume that the area is under observation.

(B) You must always stick to the shadows. When you stand out int the open you can be clearly distinguished, but in the shadows you are difficult to see. Shadows exist under most conditions, day and night. You should never fire from a wood line; you should fire from a position inside the wood line ( in shade or shadows provided by the tree tops).

Stay low to observe-

A low silhouette makes it difficult for the enemy to see you. Therefore, you should observe from a crouch, squat or prone position.

Expose nothing that shines-

Reflection of light on a shiny surface instantly attracts attention and can be seen from great distances. A sniper uncovers his rifle scope only when indexing and reducing a target. A sniper must be cautious when uncovering his rifle scope because of the light that can be reflected off of the lens.

Avoid skylining-

Figures on the skyline can be seen from a great distance, even at night, because a dark outline stands out against a lighter sky. The silhouette formed by a body makes a good target.

Alter familiar outlines-

equipment such as rifles and radio equipment and the human body are familiar outlines to the enemy. You should alter or disguise these revealing shapes by using a ghillie suit or outer smock that is covered with irregular patterns of garnish. You must alter the outline from your head to the soles of your feet.

Keep quiet-

Noise, such as talking or equipment rattling can be picked up my enemy patrols or sentinel. You must silence your gear before a mission so that it makes no sound when he walks or runs.
