Let’s take a moment to take a look again at the perfect mark, so that you’ll be able to spot her. She’ll be a woman alone, purse dangling from one shoulder, perhaps shopping, or perhaps talking on a cell phone. All that really maters is that it only takes a few seconds to make her wallet yours.
As said earlier, the perfect mark for a pickpocket is a woman alone with her purse dangling from one shoulder. But why is this you might ask? Wouldn’t a man with baggy jeans be a better target? Research has revealed that females, approximately 30 years old become pickpocket victims more often than males. Well there are several factors involved in this statement; the biggest is that if she is alone she won’t be able to deal with the distractions like someone who is with a group. This is sometimes referred to as the “lost Sheep” theory. With no one there with her she has to deal with everything on her own, making her easily distracted and set off balance. A lone person is always a prime target for robbery, but in the case of Pickpocketing having the woman alone just makes things easier. To compliment this women usually fall prey to their sisters even easier when the pickpocket is female.
Also, most Pickpocketing takes place in-between 4:30-6:00 PM, which is when most people get off of work. Have a tired, distracted mark and throw a purse into the mix and its golden.
Other reasons can be seen using the picture to the left. See how her purse dangles to one side, meaning that in most given instances her bag is completely out of her sight. And sometimes it will lay behind her, making it even easier to remove the wallet without her knowing. Purses, no mater what the shape or size, present the perfect target for a pickpocket. The wallet is not physically touching its owner, and is in fact placed in an object that is not only easily opened but also not always even with its owner. Closing devices, such as snaps, buckles, zippers, or Velcro, proved minor obstacles for the professional pickpocket. And in a crowded area a dangling purse will be bumped and pressed against many times, making the woman used to such things an unaware of a larcenous attempt on her wallet.
There are other reasons that women make the perfect marks, and they are not physical reasons either.
There is no violence involved in Pickpocketing, so your target being a man or women really has nothing to do with it. Its about how easy it is to get a hold of the valuables, and when the mark doesn’t even have them on their person its all the more easier to remove them. This is another reason women get robbed more often than men by pickpockets
Another example is that women usually have children with them and are distracted by them leaving an opening for the pickpocket to strike. And when she is with her kids she is less likely to chase after you if she realizes you just took her bag or wallet. But even when she’s alone she will sometimes take her eyes off her bag for a second and that second is all you need.

Apr 28, 2005 11:48 pm - I think it’s accurate, except for one thine reason why women so distracted is because they are usually using their brains, while men’s brains lie rather dormant and unused most of the time. It’s all in having the right anatomy I guess ;) As I woman, I would thank the son of a bitch who was able to lift from me. I’d also tell him to keep the money because he’d need it for the doctor when I got through with him lol women aren’t helpless boys
