So I’d like to start playing guitar. I wanna play metal. So I’m wondering what to get. Do I...
A) get a cheap acoustic and learn chords n shit, then once I get decent go for an electric
or
B) start off with an electric
And if I were to get an electric, what else would I need (amp, distortion pedal, etc).
Overall, I’m hoping to not spend more than $700, although I could if need be. Thanks in advance.

*shrugs*
I dont play guitar and my freind got it for his bass guitar and he uses it to play with his guitar also, it gives a "heavy" tone to it, for $40 Id say you cant go wrong. But if your looking to buy pedals, do that in person @ Guitar center, test the pedals they have out, when you see their prices, tell em to shove it and go on ZZSounds.com or Musiciansfreind and see if they have it for cheaper.

yeah, if you wanna play metal you should probably get a baritone guitar (one meant for low tuning)

Can a baritone guitar play normally also? Or is it a lower guitar?

Would this do?
Or should I go for a baritone electric, with a cheap amp and the boss distortion?

Lower tuning is the tuning down of the strings (think about setting a lower expo for a camera)
Instead of :
E
A
D
G
B
E
^^Regular tuning for the strings on a guitar it would be a step down from those tunings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuning_down
It gives a more "heavy/thicker" sound to it.

Can you tune down any guitar? Or do you need a baritone to do it?

I reccomend you start with acoustic for whatever you decide to learn.
But if you do get an electric, get an Ibanez RG, they sound good, play great, and don’t cost much.
The boss DS-1 isn’t too good for metal. Don’t bother with pedals, get a line 6 or crate 15-watt combo with that guitar and you can get some nice metal tones out of it.

And you can tune down any guitar. A baritone just has an extra string, don’t bother with those starting off, it’ll screw you over in the long run.

The man of the hour! You and Slash are the only ones that I can think of to play metal.

What’s a line 6 or a 15-watt combo? I don’t know guitar terminology.

I should learn to play the guitar we have in our house. It has 12 strings so it might be sort of hard to play.

ABSOLUTELY DONT START WITH AN ELECTRIC
you should start with an acoustic. it will build finger strength, and then once you make the transition to electric, it’ll be 10 times easier....of course, dont learn metal on acoustic, but learn basic stuff on it...it’ll make it so much better
