because if it was square it would take up too much room in the road, triangle not enough room, pentagon and higher is just retardedly complicated.

Because you cant put the lid down the hole, if it were a square you can put it on a diagonal and drop it down the hole :D

because with cars driving over it a cricle is the strongest shape as if it were square, it would be more likely to break

yeah Klerkxy is right.......and thats a good magazine for $3

Klerkxy is correct, so it won’t drop into it’s own hole.

Also, so you don’t have to place it on in any particular direction, no matter which way you point it it fits fine.

Because it won’t fall into the own hole, less metal than a square, and it fits anyway.

You’re correct; any other shape you can think of could be tipped and dropped into the hole.

But you could conceivably make the cover from a sixteen-sided regular polygon; it’d be so close to round, it wouldn’t fall in, which would solve the original problem. Then the manufacturing becomes more of a pain in the ass:

--They’re typically made of cast steel; you would need a sixteen-sided mold in which to pour the molten metal.
--The mold would be harder to maintain; the casting sand would have to shaped just perfectly to mae the sixteen hard corners.
--After the newly-cast cover comes off the mold, extra bits of metal have to be ground off by hand, using an angle grinder. This is harder to do with precision when corners and straight lines must be maintained.
--All of which begs the question: What should the city or utility company do with all the round manholes in use today? Replacing them all would be expensive, so when installing new sixteen-sided manholes, that’s another item to inventory; they’d have to eep trac of whether any given manhole is round or sixteen-sided.

So, a round manhole cover is the simplest and cheapest shape that prevents the cover from falling into the hole.

You guys are all wrong... Its round because aligators have trouble exiting round holes. They can only move through shapes with edges. Everyone knows this..

To further make understanding of my last comment, its like when a hampster will only piss in a corner.
Noone wants the evil gingavitu.... aligators escaping and causing chaos amongst the city folk? Thats what I thought. The circle idea was a well thought creation of the gods.
