I learned this in my computer class last semester...
That key is used to over type something instead of deleting it... Something like that. It also makes you keyboard look complete.

The Insert key toggles between insert mode and overwrite mode, especially in word processing applications. Try it: Open Word or some other word processor, start a new document, type some crap, and put the cursor in the middle of the crap you just typed. Type some more, and your new crap will type in the middle of your old crap.
Press Insert. There might be a status bar that changed from INS to OVR, indicating that you are now typing in Overwrite Mode instead of Insert Mode. Now when you type your new crap, if there is existing crap to the right of your cursor, your new crap will write over the old crap.
