The whole thing smacks of nationalistic dick-waving by Iran, merely intended as a show to regain the support of their own people. In the United States and Britain, the doves can say, "See? They’re nice to their hostages, not like us...", while the chickenhawks can say, "Damn, we almost had our generation’s Gulf of Tonkin Incident, which would have been just what we needed to go in with guns blazing... damn." In other words, just like that last time in 2004 or so.
If you like having affordable oil, Iran will obtain nuclear weapons. It’ll be more dick-waving, as it was with India and Pakistan a decade earlier. First will come a public test of the weapons. When the fanfare dies down, they will, as did India and Pakistan, quietly put their nuclear toys away, just in case another country decides to "liberate" them. Nuclear weapons have brought a bizarre peace to the world; no one invades a country that has them, and none that have them will launch a first strike.
