I was just about to start recording to another reel of tape when Suddenly We got a MASSIVE surge and then everything promptly went out.
After I checked to see if the backup power on the network was on I then went out to see what the hell happened. The lines looked great until I was hadfway between Dallas/Barnartvale and Valleyview (two parts of town, separated by fields. It looks like someone in a little red car was going well over the speed limit and didn’t factor the slush in when he made the corner.
As he turned the corner he hit the slush, lost control and then promptly went into the ditch and slammed into the power lines. The force then promptly caused one of the insulators to break, sending a high voltage line flying and crossing over two other lines, causing a 240 or 360V surge and then blowing out all the lines.
One additional line came loose and landed on the insulator support and since it was made of metal and it was a path to ground it turned the steel bolt that held it into place into a heating element which set the pole on fire.
At the same time the force snapped the pole, went across the highway through a support wire and ripped a telephone line off a pole on the OTHER side of the road.
So that makes
-Two poles to be replaced
-Six High-Volttage fuses to be replaced
-One telephone line that needs to be repaired
Total time I expect to be without power: at least three hours.
I wish I had a camera when I saw the accident. It would of been a million dollar picture with the car wrapped around the burning pole while you got the odd blue spark fly from the lines.

Dunno but what I do know is that since he was responsible, he has to pay for at least half of the repair cost (that’s at least $5000) not to mention his car has to be written off.
I’ll be mad pissed if any of my stuff got killed in the surge.

That would suck having to pay for that.

You don’t have surge protectors on your stuff? Even I have surge protectors.

Oh I do have surge protection but there is never a 100% promise that it will work.
By the time I saw the accident a half hour had passed since the power went out and the ambulance had come and gone and hydro crews were starting to arrive.
Everybody beyond Valleyview is without power. That’s over 3000 people.

I just shut my server down.
That should buy me another hour and a half of backup power for my wireless router and modem. I just hope my laptop holds out.

Don’t post a black picture with some text like: this is my room with a black out...
I want to see a burning red car crushed under a giant pole and chicks screaming and being raped out of chaos...

If you’re on backup power, wouldn’t you know that your stuff (important stuff atleast) wasn’t fried?

At 7:05, a little more than seven hours after it began, the power has come back on. I’ll be fully back online in less than half an hour and I will upload pics soon.

Well according to my UPS log:
2007/12/22 12:02:34 PM AC Failure
By the time I got my camera down to the site they were already cleaning up, the pole was no longer on fire and they were already starting to make a new post hole.
Back at home I lived by lantern for a while and when it got dark I grabbed my camera and took some photos (and realixed I got dead pixels).
Sadly, the power supply for our intercom seems to be the only victim of the surge.
The radio on the other hand says that the driver is in the hospital recovering from several broken ribs. Bastard deserved more than just that...
