I just want to know what caused it. Done with inexpensive digital camera:
No, the random trough of water wasn’t radiating anything when I took the picture.

JFGI... nah its probably something to do with the light sensitive plate that captures the image. Does it happen with other pictures or is it just the possessed trough?

It’s just glare, unless it happened on a lot of pictures.

No but seriously, the way it curves and how if you look closely the color changes at the top, makes me think it was just glare from the sun.

Anyone who said ’glare’ or ’sunlight’ is partially right. It’s called ’Lens Flair’.
That’s what happens when sunlight hits a lens directly.
Next time, shield the sunlight from hitting the lens with your hand, just out of view of the picture.
Pro lenses are set back an inch or so in their housing in order to reduce that phenomenon.

I’m inclined to believe the lens flair philosophy, it was my first thought as well... But I’m afraid I withheld information. These two pictures are from the same set, both were taken facing different directions:

Judging by the shadows of the (noice)bikes, the sun was far enough to your left (and slightly behind you) that it didn’t directly hit your lens. The last pic, judging by the mountain on the horizon, and the angle of the shadow of the bush next to the stream, was taken at about the same angle as the original ’ghostly Smurf fart’ pic. :-D
