So yea.. after my 500W rosewill power supply died a week back and its currently being RMA’d for a replacement, my friend lended me his old 450W power supply to use in the mean time. I plugged it in about an hour ago and my monitor is displaying the correct resolution and all but Im getting these crazy annoying "Blinks" or "flashes" of the monitor every 5 seconds. Before my old power supply was taken out, both my monitor and video were running perfectly fine, with no bullshit flashes or anything. I really dont like the thought of either my 8800 gts being fucked up or my monitor.. Could the power supply not be feeding my video card enough juice?!?If anyone can explain why my computers such a cunt, please help me.

Sounds like the PSU is having trouble giving out the needed amps.
Either that or the PSU is a piece of shit (mmm, badcaps).

I wonder if your video card is seated correctly and/or if all cables are firmly connected. Your video card could have taken a surge and fried.
BTW, it used to be cost effective to build your own machine but I don’t think it really is anymore. Right now you can get a decent dual core machine from Microcenter for about $399. You would have to upgrade the ram but that would cost less than $50. Throw in a nice video card and I highly doubt you could build your own for the same price.

Oh, and the best time of the year to buy a prefab PC is Feb-April before they release the new models for the year. Some say the best deals are in December but for those deals you have to stand in line at 2am for 6 hours freezing your hind end off.

if I were you, I would disconnect anything in your case you DONT need.
Unplugging your DVD/CD drive would be a good place to start.
And if you added any fans to your case, you got to shut them off.
Sounds like the PSU is struggling to deliver enough juice to all your components. If you dont get rid of something, your going to have a brown-out

Well thats the problem, youre experiencing a 50 watt shortage of power.
No offense, but I love it when people shit bricks over the fact that their "uber leet graphics card" isnt so "leet" when it burns out or it doesnt get enough power to be "uber".

Ok lets see here...
core 2 duo (non overclocked currently)
8800 gts 640 mg
2 gigs of ram
zalman heatsink
creative xfi sound card
1 hard drive (250 gb)
cd/dvd drive combo
I believe thats all. The flashing is very consistant, it’s timed at exactly 5 1/2 seconds every flash.

I see the obvious sense in that, im retarded. Although, explain a "brown out", new lingo to me.

A power outage may take one of three forms:
Blackout
where power is lost completely. While the word "blackout" is one of the most common colloquial terms, "Load shedding" or a rolling blackout refers specifically to a controlled way of rotating available generation capacity between various districts or customers, thus avoiding wide area total blackouts.
Brownout
where the voltage level is below the normal minimum level specified for the system. Systems supplied with three-phase electric power also suffer brownouts if one or more phases are absent, at reduced voltage, or incorrectly phased. Such malfunctions are particularly damaging to electric motors. Some brownouts, called voltage reductions, are made intentionally to prevent a full power outage.
Dropout
where the loss of power is only momentary (milliseconds to seconds).

well it could be that 50 watt shortage thing. when your old power supply died did it just stop working or did it do something that could have fried anything on the inside?

You’re using shitty power supplies, that’s the problem.
Power supplies are only efficient to a limit, it all depends on the quality. Let’s say your rosewill claims 500 watts, and it’s 70 percent efficient, that means 350 watts actual output, and it’s most likely a paperweight when you load it like that.
I recommend a corsair PSU, 520+, or a seasonic, 500+

corsair makes premium products. Rosewill is pretty generic and from what I’ve found has a higher failure rate. I would agree with filthy and go with quality.

If you want to test your system to be sure what wrong, try running a graphic intensive like a game.
If your comp struggles to run it or the game crashes then your PSU isnt supplying it with enough power and you know that is whats wrong

That’s how people usually stress test GPU overclocks.
Look at these links.

Wattage is not all.
You also need a decent number of amps on the 12V rail
My 430W Thermaltake has a 12V rail that delivers only 18 amps which is not much.
