When I start my pc (Compaq Ppresario) it freezes on the first screen (big red letters saying COMPAQ on a black background, down the bottom it says v3.43 esc=boot menu f1=setup f10=system recovery.

There are white sripes. They are about 3 pixels thick, 1cm apart, vertical, all over the screen. it is OVER the rest of the picture (the compaq writing)

None of those buttons do anything, and it just freezes like this for all eternity.
Pulled it apart, put it back together, its STILL like that.

Any clues?
thankin’ ye.

Hmm.

Sounds like your video card is messed up.

Either that, or your system got corrupted somehow.

Those are my guesses, I never said they were right.

No idea. Have got all but the slightest clue about anything to do with my computer, or any computer, to be honest.
Repairable? Or do I need a new something?

A- He most likely has an external card since everyone from Aus/NZ/Fiji/that general area likes to play SHOOTAN GAEMS on flashy computers with neon LED lights splayed all over the case.
B- What model computer do you have? Maybe we can try and help you that way.

It might not be the graphics card. Sounds like a motherboard problem to me.
Have you downloaded any unknown source porn lately?

If the card is onboard, that means its on the motherboard. Which means, in plain and simple terms: Get a new computer.

not necesarily.
check cords and conections.
Try another monitor to make sure it is the mobo.
unplug computer and hold down power button for 20 or 30 seconds.
plug everything back in and try and get into the CMOS/BIOS, (Press F1 when it first come on)
Look for something like "Restore Factory Presets"
if none of that works, try and put in another video card
(yeah I know you prolly don’t have one.... but that;s all I got for yah.)
if the mobo is fried it’s prolly a dieing powersupply behind it, so scrap it.
get a dell for good cheap preformance and customer service/warranty.
or have someone build you a nice rig( if you do this post what they’re charging & giving here so we can make sure you don’t get gouged).

^^ No, you could add a new video card and disable the one on the motherboard, just as if you were upgrading it. Providing that actually is the problem.

Have you tried starting in safe mode? You might be able to see what’s causing the problem from there. You might have a corrupted driver that needs reinstalling or for that matter maybe the OS needs to be reinstalled completely. Not the worse thing in the world to do a complete reinstall, it’ll get rid of a lot of little glitches in the OS when you start fresh.

No, its just a sign of stupidity when people call computers rigs. Inadvertently those are also the people who "liek shootan gaems" and play with cases modded out with "awmg blu led lightz & 9600gt cardz".

well it’s happening before anything has a chance to boot so there must be a short or something somewhere.
harddrive, ram, cd drive all can be assumed in working order as of now (big assumption). could also try popin out your mobo’s battery, check for physical damage while you’re in there. other than that, maybe flash the bios, or take it to a pc repair guy.
