What I looked at from Dell
My mom says that shed be up for paying off a $2k computer with compounded interest that would bring it up to like $2.5k (or more), but spending money all at once on a computer is something she cant do (for some reason).
She suggested Dell in the first place, and I was like "mehhhh..."
But I decided to build something for shits and giggles and saw that Dell 420 (inb4stonerjokes). Its fucking GODLY. Its got an LCD screen right on the fucking case, 7.1 surround sound, and other neat features I dont remember.
What do you guys think of how I customized it? NonPermissive suggests I go for the surround sound speakers, but I dont like sharing my music/movies/shootan gaeman with other people. Dell offers "gaming mice & keyboards" for people who like to play SHOOTAN GAEMAN, but I only might go for the keyboard.

Oh, and dont comment on the Vista. Im either gonna dual boot Vista and Mint, replace Vista with XP and dual-boot that with Mint, or just dedicate the whole system to Linux (which I really shouldnt do if I get it, since ill have a 320gb HDD).
They had no options to get it with XP.

Desktop.
I was originally gonna "build" a laptop from Dell, but I realized I could get more power for less from a Desktop.
I just gotta somehow see if I can order this thing by tomorrow, cause the sale ends around 10 ’til 6am on Monday.

XPS 420, sub e8400, 8800 gt, add in the cheaper 24" or the 22", and it’s around 1600.
I suggest looking at velocity micro or some of the other boutiques though.

This is a decent deal with the e8400, Zalman CNPS8000 and you can get a 22" monitor for ~200 dollars at a local store, then return it if it’s got any defects.

The thing about a Dell computer is that the motherboards always burn out overtime. and something always seemed wrong with mine, thats why I have a HP now.

I have a 22", its great.
Also, dont upgrade external hardware with Dell, drop the Dell shit altogether and get a pimping mouse and keyboard for a better price

1- Filthy, im not looking for something for heavy vidya gaeman, im just looking for something thats powerful enough to run some of the other things that I need.
2-My friend has an XPS 400, I think is the model name, and hes going on one year with it and hes had no complaints.

4-Who cares about what a case looks like? The only reason I like that case is: LCD screen on the outside, card reader, 4 USB ports, and IT LOOKS PERFECT FOR SHOOTAN GAEMAN.

This:
I showed the 420 to my mom and she got pissed because she says shes not paying "more than a thousand dollars for a computer". I told her she payed a little under $2,000 for a computer just to pay bills on and she was like "YEAH BUT IM THE ONE PAYING FOR IT". So a laptop seemed like a more sensible choice, cause more RAM and a processor upgrade is a bit cheaper when youre building a laptop (or so I think).

tl;dr: my mom didnt wanna pay over $24/mo.
I think its horribly under-spec’d from what I need/want, but its better than my current machine so I guess its better than nothing. What is your opinion?

Why cant you build your own PC, much cheaper, you learn alot more and you get what you want in it - you’re not restricted to pay alot if it fucks up either, since you know what to replace it with.
Some nice cooling etc wont break its warranty etc.
If you cared THAT much about cases, custom cases are alot nicer than the stock shit dell sells.

A- Because they dont offer XP as a viable option. Im gonna dual boot that and Mint (or FC8), though.
B- I would build my own PC, but I dont feel like buying what I think are quality parts off of newegg and then finding out theyre cheap asian things and them breaking within a month.
Id rather have a computer that breaks within a year than one that breaks within a month. Im sure some of you more tech-savvy people can build a computer with good parts that are better than what I posted above for under $1k, but I cant.
