I’m out of ideas for fast ways to back up around 48gb’s of stuff on my computer so I can reformat it. I tried using KGB to compress it, but it will take forever and I used WinRAR to compress and split the files into 700mb so I can burn them to cd, but I don’t have enough cds.

Can anyone give me ideas?!

I have a 250gb external hard drive that has all of my stuff backed up on it. If you can afford it I would suggest buying one.

The external hard drive is the only way you are going to move 48gb anywhere fast. You may just want to buy one to free up the space on your computer’s HDD for good. I, like Cryde, have a 250GB external, though mine is used more on a day to day role, instead of strictly backup. Mine never leaves my computer because I just keep it plugged in. It has all my music, videos, pictures, essentially any media that takes up a large amount of space. I really suggest getting one, I couldn’t be happier. Depending on how big your computer’s HDD is and how filled up the media makes it, you may even see a large jump in computer speed, I did at least. (Mostly because I have 50-some GB of media, and my computer’s HDD is a 106 and a bunch of that was taken up by game files and Windows, so I was running on a 70% full HDD.)

The only other idea I have, is (if you have access to another computer with a hard drive that has enough space), to network that computer and yours together and just move it though the network. That will most likely be the fastest data transfer rate, depending on your network setup.

(Also, before either putting it on a external HDD, or transferring it to another computer, if you take one of those roads. You might as well just Winrar all those 700mb .rar’s into one large one, it might make it a bit smaller. However, with the time it would take to put them all in one .rar, you might just want to move the bunch of files themselves [In the 700mb .rar’s that is])

Would I be able to set up a partition on my hard drive and move all of the files onto it? I mean, would it still be there with all of the files after I reformat?

No, when you repartition the hard-drive, you lose all the data on the drive. Imagine a pizza with different toppings, then "partitioning" it (cutting it) without looking will chop apart the pizza and you’d never have pieces with individual toppings.

I’d suggest getting one of these for that purpose, and using it for redundancy later. You’d be amazed how easily a harddrive failure can occur. See: Murphy’s Law

Create a partition with partition magic, move the important stuff onto it, and then reinstall windows to the C:/ partition

I suppose you could do that. You may lose all the info however, when you format it.

Now you only spend about 20$ instead of $150+ for a external HD
