That policy was yesterdays news, here’s the update from more recent developments. It’s not a random article on some small website, it’s on the national MSNBC website.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19714916/
I’m sure they contact your family and recommend a good beating too.

That piece was a bit biased, it made it sound like this is having a hug effect on Wal-Mart and putting it into the red. Obviously, however, Wal-Mart is raking in huge profits. They just want more. Nothing wrong with that, especially since less thefts mean lower prices for everyone, but I don’t appreciate the spin on this article.

Looks pretty much like a list of facts, I don’t know how you "spin" a fact.
How does a documented change in Walmart’s policy take on a spin? It’s simply a fact that they’ve changed it.

That sucks, although they do have profit to spare, they shouldn’t have to.
They should also clean up their act, employee treatment, market cornering, etc.

Wal Mart is a fucking bank (no, literally). Why the hell should they have to worry about losses when, like NPE said, they rake in massive profits daily.
The security guards are the kind of douchebags that never got out of that "football player/macho mentality/popped collar"-douchebag mentality even after they dropped out of college.

Maybe I overreacted to the "spin", as I saw the words "eroded" and "relaxed" and I jumped to conclusions. In any case, it’s not really a big deal to me.

I’d say a company of that size with all of it’s millions of employees is bound to hire tons of jerks, it’s just the law of averages. Lots of them just hide who they are and fall through the cracks until they do something wrong and get caught at it.
Is the point really that they can afford a loss? I thought stealing wasn’t a good thing, no matter who you stole from. Or is it OK just because it’s a big company?
Quote: especially since less thefts mean lower prices for everyone Isn’t that more the point of curbing shoplifting, not that they can afford it, but that you and I can’t afford it? There’s not a single company that would foot that bill, they pass those [sarcasm] savings [/sarcasm] on to you with higher pricing!

You can’t justify stealing. I don’t see why some of you idiots confuse capitalism and greed. Greed is a word invented by communists.

*but
There’s no reason for them to spare any profit I mean, through shoplifting.
And yes, everything under $25 is free.

I wasnt trying to justify stealing you moron. There wasnt a word in there that says stealing is okay.
But I think the punishment doesnt fit the crime, is all.

Wal-Mart doesn’t punish them, the courts do. They need to do something to deter theft seeing as that demographic (16-18) probably steals more than any other.

Moose- Kinda true.
They have the option whether or not to send someone to court. They could just let someone go with a slap on the wrist, and do in some cases.

It isn’t cost effective for walmart to prosecute children and the elderly for theft under $25. Think about it... good lawyers run about $400/hour... that’s 8 thefts per one lawyer hour. I’ll bet the lawyers log over 100 hours per case easily. That’s $40,000 per case for a theft under $25. Usually, children and the elderly just get probation anyway so it isn’t like there is every a huge outcome.
Furthermore, imagine if Jr.or Grandma is caught shoplifting and turned into the police. Walmart claims the average family now spends at least $8,000 per year in their store. I’m sure the parents would either be so angry or so humiliated they would take their business elsewhere. It’s a "bottom line" business decision.

i got caught for shoplifting at wal mart a few years ago... my friend was the one stealing but i got blammed also because i was with him and i didnt "leave when i noticed he was doing somthing wrong" so we both got kicked out of "every" wal mart in canada for a year. no cops were called or anything, because when they asked if my friend wanted a lawyer he said no.
maybe this has happend to people before but have you ever had to sit and listen to someone pointlessly chat about off-topic things, and you couldnt do anything because you were already in trouble. well thats what happend to me, the securtiy guards wouldnt shut up. and they kept talking about things that had nothing to do with what was going on, i mean if im going to be removed from the property with a ban of 1 year from these guys, chances are im not going to want to hear about your life story.
funny thing is i now indirectly work for walmart.

It was fucking annoying.
And they were obviously the types of guys who were too faggy/weak/lame/whatever to become real cops, or whatever.

I didn’t think walmart had actual security guards in uniform. Tell me, chlorinesteen, did they have uniforms?
When I was a walmartian (eons ago), they had a security team of two people: one old lady that acted like she shopped in the store watching for people to rip things off and a guy watching the cameras and listening to the old lady radio in shop lifters. When something went down, the second security person and a manager would confront the thief. The old lady kept her cover and never confronted the thief. Neither the security person nor the manager wore a security guard uniform.

Their security team is plainclothes.
They just walk around the store monitoring niggers and pretending to shop/examine items and shit. Then they see someone doing something suspicious, examine them more, then make up more shit to pin on them, then run out and confront them when they leave the store.
I heard something about once you get out of the store they cant do shit to you, though.

You act like this is such a big deal. It’s not. Most shoplifters don’t even get noticed by employees.

That’s interesting, because it’s not legally stealing until it’s taken off the premises

Most people chop the packaging off of what they want then put the goods into a pocket or bag. = stealing.
