I just got a letter from my internet service provider that says they know that me and my roommate are downloading stuff illegally and will quit providing to us if they catch us doing it again. I dont know how they check for those things or how we got caught but we use Limewire and Torrents, and I was wondering which one got us caught. If you got any input on this it would be nice, preciate it.

Anything that isn’t encrypted is fair game to the prying eyes of your service provider. It’s probably in their terms of service.

if you are using limewire make sure you don’t have anything shared. if you are already not sharing anything then the torrents got you in trouble. stick to https downloads for a while (rapidshare, megaupload, etc...).

Switch internet providers and tell them to go fuck themselves. This isn’t communist China. Tell them to provide the MAC address of the offending computer (which they can’t) otherwise your neighbors stealing your wireless could have been the ones doing it.

mortified penguin-- i was thinking the same thing, but the only thing I got was from the internet people.
The idea of saying it was someone else on my wireless is good. They can’t prove shit so ill stick with that

Quote: You know...rapidshare is so much easier.
:( I not paying for that ... torrents are freeeeeeeeeeeee!
However, if they say stuff is being downloaded,
can they not tell that the stuff being trasnfered hrough the router is going to the ip of your computer?
Becuase th ip of your computer is registered in there system.
It’s simple for them to see where the stuff being downloaded is going too?
Thats how they can tell how much you have "downloaded" in a month, and to which computer.
(On my bill anyways, but yours could be different i guess)
I just want to ask more question, to help make sure you get it right lol.

I use torrents mainly, Demonoid, TPB most of the time, But sometimes I might go on warez and use Lisk’s rapidshare. Thx bbz, btw. Never had a letter here.

No. Your router’s IP is registered to their system. If you have, say, five computers going through that router, they couldn’t tell you which exact computer of the five it was going to. Therefore, it could be going to the neighbor’s who are stealing your wireless connection.
Seriously, they are never going to stop file sharing. Not ever. It is a waste of time and money for everyone. To give into their bullying is preposterous. Don’t get me started on this. I have a long list of the RIAA offenses against the average person. They get no sympathy from me.
If you’re stealing movies, you’re wasting your bandwidth. You can cheaply get DVD’s and watch or copy them. You can also wait a few months and see them at the dollar theater. It’s silly to steal those. Also, the MPAA isn’t quite as bad as the RIAA.

You’re lucky to have gotten a letter, I downloaded Rambo IV, got cut off a couple days later and my ISP didn’t even tell me why.
I rang, though, and apparently they got a letter from MGM or whoever it is. I had to go in to sign a letter saying I wouldn’t do it again and that the file has been deleted from my computer (this was last year and it’s still on my D drive). If I do it again, it’s a £30 charge to be reconnected. If I’m caught after that, that’s it. The three strikes rule.
That wouldn’t be so bad, if Karoo wasn’t the only fucking ISP in my area.
Monopolising bastards.

Yeah around 2 years ago Comcast sent me an email saying that EA sports was complaining that I was illegally downloading one of their games. (NBA live 08) That was from a torrent. I’ve been sticking to Megaupload ever since then. Hasn’t failed me yet :D

Your ISP isn’t going to run DPI on every packet that goes through their network just to catch file-sharers (something that nets them no profit, by the way). The main way is by connecting to a public tracker and getting the IP addresses of peers from there. I’m not sure how it’s done for the Gnutella Network (ie, Limewire), but I’d imagine it’s equally simple.

That is to say, the **AA will find your IP address and send your ISP a letter, rather than your ISP actively searching for infringement. This may change in the future, and for some ISPs, it already has. These are few however.
