I was just wondering about the time I was banned for bumping an old topic. I realized that I had no idea why it was not allowed. Can any of you tell me why it is not allowed? And please don’t just say "Because I said so" because I know that a few of the mods would say that.

If you are adding something pertinent or new to the topic or it comes up in discussion via another topic, you can bump it and you won’t get banned. But if you bump it with no new information you get a ban because that’s what spammers do... bump old topics. I would think you would have gotten a warning rather than banning tho.

You could always make a new thread with a link to the old one in case your new info isn’t earth shatteringly important enough to bump an old thread for.

I may have been who banned you, but I don’t recall.
Technically, there isn’t any "technical" reason not to bump. It doesn’t overheat the server, it doesn’t format the harddrive, etc.
But it’s the logical reasons that prevent topics from being bumped.
- It’s the rules (I expand on this in a second)
- It’s annoying, most people see an old topic here, where 50% of the members are deleted/missing, so the topic makes no sense.
- It’s unfair, say it’s a flame thread, and you wait two months to do your flame back (yes, this is like punching somebody in the back of the head on the schoolbus weeks after a fight), other participants in the thread can’t respond, or may have changed their views.
- It removes any sense of order the category had. If I posted a topic back in January ’06, and you bumped it on January of ’07, and I go back through the directory looking all through January ’06 for my topic (to see who replied, etc), it won’t be there, because somebody bumped it.
- It takes a major trolling weapon and throws it out the window. Think about this topic you just posted. If I went through the older topics responding with "lol", "haha", and other pointless bumps, people may not even see your topic because it would be on a different page of the forum index.

I was wondering the same thing!
I had alot of new information for a topic awhile back that would have solved it...but i dont recall what the topic was and what the information was.
FML.
