On the mayan doomseday calender the end of the world is set @ december 12, 0r 13, 2012, i’m not sure of the exact date. The mayan astrologers and shamans prophesized man’s technologies would no longer function as man commanded, and therefore would be man’s downfall. There is a myriad of apocolyptic scenarios where technology is the agent of destruction- Nanobots that devour carbon, Y2K, nuclear warfare. Yet in this discussion I shall focus on one that isn’t some far fetched sci-fi plot.

-What I believe will spell the end of society as we know is what we all hold dear and take for granted: FUEL

Gas prices have been continueing to rise for years. But every day we burn fuels synthesized from crude oil, we bring our selves one day closer to when these supplies shall simply run out.

I think the scientific community should buckle down on developing an alternative to gas rather than endlessly debating over global warming.

But anyway, the world economy runs on one thing:OIL. Factories, Farms, Ships, Cars, Trucks, Trains, Planes... They all run on oil. As these prices of all other products shall increase.

There shall be a world-wide recession, far more greater and disaterous than the Great Depression of the 1930s. What is drying up our oil supplies quicker than we expected is that the growing economies and peoples of Asia have begun to own automobiles rather than bicycles. The daily consumption of oil has therefore been raised from 80Million barrels a day to 100Million barrels.

Food prices will soar due to the high cost of fueling farming equipment, people will no longer be able to heat thier homes, reverting to wood and the skies will be black with smoke. Suburbans will have no way to get to work.

The black market will boom. Gangs rideing motorbikes running on ethanol will terrorize the streets. People will brew thier ethanol fuel on rooftops.

Currently one of the only nations that has ethanol as it’s main fuel source is Brazil, due to thier vast sugercane plantations. Brazil also has vast cattle ranches so they won’t suffer as badly as the other parts of the world. Yet again south american shall be a sanctuary as the other parts of the world are engulfed in war.

Western powers will yet again converge on the middle east to controll the dwindling fuels. The islamic oil states will then resort to thier nuclear arsenals to defend thier precious fuel resourses.

As this dawned on me i became very disturbed. I luckily know how to live in the wild and harbour personal anarcho-prmitist beliefs. If the world does expierience this oil apocolypse me and my girlfriend will just have to journey through collapsing civilization south to BRAZIL.

I just wondered what my fellow RE intellectuals have to contribute regarding this subject, so as to hopefully ease my troubled mind.

0h, and 4 more info on an oil apocolypse click this link ->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil#Implications_of_a_world_peak

Food wont get more expensive because of the cost of oil to run factories; non-oil-using industries will dominate. And in a few years gas will be fucking expensive, so only rich people will buy it, thus decreasing its usage.

And if governments have the money to let the air force take rides on planes where 12 minutes of fuel cost you a million dollars, I’m pretty sure they give money to research too.

And also, I recently saw online an article about a guy who accidentally discovered how to make fire by passing radio waves through watter with salt. Watter with salt? Isn’t that what we have on 3/4ths of the planet’s surface? I’m sure that in a few years they’ll tamper it to work with sea watter. They will take watter out of the oceans to make fire and stuff; that way, whatever melts from the north pole, won’t affect us as much.

Also, use a bike if you don’t fucking want to spend money on gas, It’s as simple as that.

Yes, bikes are always a very feul effective mode of transportation. And could you post a link about the guys who figured out how 2 make fire by passing radio waves through salt water?

going off what Garlock siad....and this is how evolution will continue..not to be mean but all the fat/unhealthy people will die out because they are not as physicaly fit to hunt or even get food for themselves. they would not be able to be self relient so they will try to ethier enslave fit women or just simply die off.

and then man will turn it around and hopefully come close to what the world is now but smarter.......though not in the same life time of the apocolypse surviors...probly hundreds if not thousands of years after

I couldn’t find the link that I wanted. I saw it in school when they linked us to some science page. I haven’t watched the video, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same guy.

I feel like pointing out that the mayan calendar doesnt "end" in 2012 it repeats. its a new unit of measurement such as a year or milenia. its just happens to be the biggest unit they have recoreded.

I saw the thing about the guy making fire too...
Btw the apocolypse isnt Dec.12, its Dec. 20 2012.
My solution is to get rid of all the fucking hummers and other shit like that. Now that they are gone, America will require less gas. Less demand for gas=cheaper gas prices, cheaper gas=the oil countries run low on money, low money=we (or europe)take controll and stop using as much oil. Problem solved.
I would say something else, but im not sure if you intended this thread to be about the 2012 apocolypse, or al-gore type shit

The world has always been in the same shit as it is in today. It has just been in a smaller scale.

Think of it as if this were the intensity scale.
Starting out in lvl 1 intensity.
1
Multiply it by two.
2
times two
4
... and so on
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32....

And because there are more things to cause problems now a days, it seems like it could end.
The "word" as we know it can’t really end unless Earth breaks into little pieces. If the "oil apocalypse" were to actually happen, it would just cause global chaos for a decade and it would settle afterwards.

December 20th 2012 is going to be a great day. All the people stupid enough to believe in the world ending that day will commit suicide a few days before. Thus lightly reducing stupidity in the world.

I somewhat believe in the apocolypse, but if it is true, then ill ride it out.
Also, (i am the mongoose), you are stupid enough to believe that a race of people that existed hundreds of years ago and are nor extinct/i havent seen them can predict the end of the world? Grow a fucking brain...(lol the apocolypse will be caused by god...)

I believe the world (and universe in this case) will end when all the atoms in the universe fail to attract to each other and they all completely fall apart into nothing.

Ridiculous, I know. But sometimes I think about it in chemistry class when I don’t pay any attention to the teachers’ crazy stories

Same.
The universe wont do what you said. Everything will start fusing. Eventully the fussion will make an element so heavy that it cant be fused, due to the fact that there isnt enough heat. At set point everything ends, and earth=fail

He’s not retarded, he just discovered something that will change the world. And he didn’t mean element as in the basic structure formed by atoms (feel free to correct my definition), he meant it in an other way.
Restricted and Basis, both or your theories might be plausible, but they wont occur for an other kagillion years, so there is no reason for us to worry about it.

Oh yea I know it won’t happen anytime soon. But it’s just some of the things I think about instead of rotting my mind watching television and playing video games.

There is no chance of this scenario as man has the sun for fuel and all the technology to use it. Oil is slowly being phased out as we learn how to maintain our economy without it as a major source of money. That’s the main reason we haven’t done it already, money not fuel.
