None of my friends knew of the genre, nor do any like the genre. Not to mention the fact they had very weird looks on their faces when i showed them some Streetlight Manifesto. I personally thought it was the horns that threw them off, but apparently they dislike the vocals as well. I showed them some Less Than Jake and they said "I like this type of music", truth be told, it’s the same genre. I think they’re somewhat music illiterate, but, the question is: "Is Ska really that weird?". I could go way more into the question, and ask if other genres are really that weird. But i wont.

It’s possible it’s because they do not go online much. Thus meaning their musical influence is school, parents and the radio. Unlike me being influenced from others members and whatnot.

For those who do not know what "ska" is, here is a sample of Streetlight Manifesto’s newer material. Although the "horns" only play a roll, and like all bands, each one differs.

Is it really THAT weird?

Oh, and if you want to get technical, i showed my friend this clip from their song "On and On and On". Coincidently, it was around this part of the song to.

I get that exact same shit.

In school I was listening to Would you be impressed by SLM and some kid wanted to listen, and he goes "this is hilarious- what is this?"

I told him to fuck off if he doesnt appreciate music. Ska is fucking great music, and anyone who doesnt like/appreciate it needs to learn what music is.

hahah I get that alot for the type of music I listen to.. I could be listening to some hardcore psytrance then the song changes to some Beatles or Don McLean.

Ska is good, but I dont really like the new stuff you listening too.. Madness ftw!

I like the Punk/Ska genre, the Voodoo Glow Skulls pull it off amazingly well with the perfect blend of gutiar vocals and trumpet.
Heres a link to their myspace

And i think its somthing new a different in todays society thats flooded with the most unoriginal music since music began

Ska isn’t that weird. It’s just the amount of a Brass section is what usually is the deciding factor for people on whether theyll accept it or not. Granted it seems like on RE it’s kind of overrated since it’s so widely listened to, but IRL, no one nows what the fuck it is. It goes both ways for me, but I appreciate that the people on here know the genre and like it to an extreme.

Thats what I want people to do. Im not trying to get people to like it, Im trying to get people to appreciate that sort of music, and respect it.

I barely know any "new" music, much less so Ska. But I do think that it’s better than a lot of the other shit out there. I think the band as a whole is more talented with the addition of trumpets, trombones, etc. I hate stupid 3-chord songs.

Doesn’t most old Rock music tie in with that, maybe a few more chords, but roughly the same thing?

See, since I listen to so many different types of music, I’m able to get my friends into a lot, but the stuff that they don’t really like, I still get them to respect.

I love ska, and most of my friends do too. Actually, I got back at 3:30 this morning from a ska show. It is definitely one of the best types of music in my opinion, it takes skill to play it because of the horns, any one can pick up a guitar and play rock music, but not everyone can pick up a horn and play like that.

If you go to a ska concert, you will also know that you’ve had the best night of your life.
I can guarantee that if you take someone who is completely anti-ska to a concert, they will love it.

I went to an all ska show, and didnt like it. I’ve played with a ska band, and couldnt wait for them to get off stage. I dont like ska.
