Does downtuning your instruments so rediculously low you cant distinguish notes(I’ve found a band in Drop G) or does higher tuned, unstructured songs strike your fancy?

It really depends on the rhythm in my opinion. You can tune you’re shit really low, or just have it tuned normally...
It’s all in how you play your instrument. You can do some heavy shit on a violin if you wanted too.. Or even on a harp.. I’ve done some crazy shit on a harp.

So it isnt about the sound you’re producing, its the way the notes are being played?

I kind of agree with Gill. It’s more about the way you play things then what sounds you produce. Usually if bands have a lot of weird guitar effects and the bass is cranked loud and the drums sound as loud as jet engines, that’s what I consider heavy just based on the standard of noise today. That might also come from the fact that music is generally louder today then it was back a generation or so ago.

Its called the Minor Key, its what gave classical music that "ominous" sound and its worked into the blues and pentatonic scales which are used for writing heavier music. It also helps when riffs tend to go down the scale instead of up. Combine the two with distortion and some good amps and you have metal.

Me...
Slash pretty much covered it.
Throw in some tritones and diminished stuff to get a really evil sound.
Fast rhythm and minor chord progressions.
Minor thirds, and augmented fourths are good too.
