Thermite:

Materials:
Any desired amount of Ferric Oxide (Iron Oxide)
Any desired amount of Fin aluminum flakes (at least 94% pure)
Magnesium ribbon (this is your fuse so judge your length)
Heat source (a Stove top if preferable)
A Cast iron Skillet or Pot

First off, some of you might be wondering "what the heck is thermite!?". Thermite is basically a mixture of two very simple materials, Ferric Oxide (a.k.a Iron oxide or rust. yes, common rust.), and some aluminum shavings. The products combined form a very volatile heat source, that when lit, can melt through just about anything. That is with the exception of tungsten, but unless you plan on burning a hole through the space shuttle or some wiring in a furnace or something like that you’re not going to have any problems with that. now I’ve heard that the perfect mixture of this stuff can vaporize carbon steel... I haven’t had the chance to test it on carbon steel yet. Basically this is a powder that when lit will melt through about anything you want. Most of its applications are in working with metal and I have heard that some fire depts. use it for training.

Now to the process of making this awesome little fiery friend. First your going to need Ferric oxide (iron oxide)... this you can order of Ebay (search for iron oxide, or ferric oxide) I have found a big ol’ 1kg jar of Ferric oxide for about $20. Do not try to go out to that old Junker car in your back yard and scrape some off the muffler, rust that comes from those sorts of things often contain impurities. So now that you have your iron oxide your going to need some aluminum shavings or filling you will want as small as flakes as possible but you do not want it to be a powder, your aluminum has to be at least 94% pure (a aluminum bar or rod from a hardware store is usually the best route, just shave it down). Now for later your going to need a magnesium ribbon, this you can also get off of ebay or a science store... *side note: the Ferric oxide and the magnesium ribbon will almost always be available in you school science department, ask your favorite teacher.* The measurements for this batch is 8 grams iron oxide to 3 grams aluminum. Of course you can increase the batch size if you wish. Take your cast iron pot and place it on the stove, turn the heat on the stove up to about medium high. Pour in your Ferric oxide in and heat it up till it’s a nice red color. Sometimes when you buy your ferric oxide it might be red already. That means it has been purified. You still must heat it though. Then mix in your aluminum. Keep this on the fire for about 30 seconds then remove and stick it some where to cool. Putting it on a cookie sheet works nicely. After this is done you might want to make sure and stir it a bit to make sure that the powders stay evenly distributed. Thermite can be stored just about anywhere. Keep it in a box under your bed, a can out in the garage that’s filled with mounds of useless junk, or in a jar marked salt and pepper in your spice cabinet. Well, don’t do that last one.

Now I’m sure your all like “Get to the point I want to know how to light this stuff, and what its going to do!!!” Ok so we’ll use this example (as this was how I heard it for the first time). So, take a 50 cent piece size pile of this stuff and set it on the hood of your worst enemy’s car. Now to light it. Take the magnesium ribbon I mentioned earlier and cut about an inch of it off and stick it in the pile of thermite. Try to rest the ribbon on top and not actually submerge it in the thermite. Now you’re most likely going to have to light the ribbon with a propane torch or a butane lighter. This is going to melt right on through the car and into the cement. Yeah, you’re going to have to replace the engine and replace or weld the axle back together. Also if you need to form the thrmite around something, say a pole. What you can do is this. Mix 1 Part modeling clay to 4 parts thermite. Make sure it is very well mixed. You now have thermite putty!

Thermite:

Materials:

Any amount of Copper Oxide(CuO or CuO2)
Any amount of Aluminum filings
Magnesium Ribbon
DC Converter or Alot of Batteries!
Copper Material
Aluminum Material
Salt
Glass Jar
Metal File

First the copper oxide. Take your glass jar and fill it about 3/4 the way with water. Add a bit of salt, and stir until it is completely dissolved. Next strip back the leads on your DC Converter. Place the leads in the water, and plug in the DC Converter. The one that bubbbles the most is your negative lead. Attach your copper material to the positive lead, and submerge both in the water on opposite sides. DO NOT let them touch! If they touch, it will short circuit and you will not make oxide and you can blow your transformer! Let that sit for a good 10 hours.

Now to get your aluminum filings. Take your file in one hand, your aluminum material in the other. Now file down your material, and collect the filings on a piece of paper, etc.. Now collect those in a jar.

Now remove the leads from the water and let the water evaporate or boil it off. Grind the remaining oxide into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle.

Now mix your two ingredients using the "Diaper Method". Place both in the center of a flat piece of newspaper and lift the corners, causing the powders to fall back on themselves. Do this until they appear to be evenly mixed.

Time to light this! Take about a 50 cent sized pile and place it on something metal that you hate. Place your magnesium ribbon on top, and bend up one end (makes it easier to light, in my experience). Use either a butane torch or propane torch for fast ignition. It is possible to use a regualr bic lighter, but it takes a good 15 seconds of constant flame to ignite.

Voila! You’ve made thermite with Copper Oxide!
