This is the story of the first time I made Sodium. For those who don’t know, sodium is a reactive metal that will generate massive amounts of hydrogen gas and heat when it meets water. In decent amounts (just a few grams) it will actually explode.

Anyways, I knew that salt was Sodium Chloride, written as NaCl. I did some research, and found that salt melts at about 803 degrees celsius. I figured that I could just melt salt and perform electrolysis(run an electric current through it). So I filled a tuna can with salt, and rigged up my trusty blowtorch beneath it. When it had all melted, I turned down the heat and stuck in the terminals for my DC toy train power. Being impatient by nature, (I was 8) I left and watched tv for about an hour. I came back later, and not seeing any fizzing, I figured it hadn’t worked. So, I took the can and threw it in the snow. It promptly exploded, firing this blackened can into the air. It landed and started hissing loudly. Since then, I have made sodium many times, always works.

Ok this was the first time I was going to try and make the "Potassium Nitrate" smoke bomb.So my parents were out of the house and I was the only one home. I completed the whole thing and just poured it into my mold and inserted the fuse when i heard a loud whoosh. Turning around I found that the remnants of the smoke bomb that were still in the pot had ignited, sending a colum of thick black smoke into the air. There was about a foot of black smoke floating around my ceiling when it was all done smoking. Frantically I opened all of the windows and placed fans at all of them. It took our hours to clear out and strangely the smoke alarms never went off.
