Manure or dung is mixed with straw, sand, and plant matter. The mixture is put into a large plastic container, then moisturized with urine. Everday, the mixture must be kept moist with urine, protected from sunlight and rain, and repeatedly turned over every week or so to decompose it quicker. After approximately 3 months or so, the mixture is then moisturized with regular water. After another month, the heap is leached with water, the potassium nitrate dissolved into the liquid. The solution is then boiled until the volume is approximately 1/8 of its previous volume. The crystals are then filtered out, and the water is tossed (this contains dissolved NaCl and other impurities.) Dry the crystals, and what you have is relatively pure potassium nitrate.

As part of the first step, wood or paper ashes should be added and mixed with the heap, or done while boiling the solution.

It has been a long tradition in Europe to harvest potassium nitrate from animal manure. The Swedish paid a quarter of their taxes in potassium nitrate.

dont you think you shouldnt just go to your local gardening store and buy tree stump remover? 90% pure is enough to make a smoke bomb
