What amazes me is not how someone could have thought it up, but just how many people BELIEVE it. It kind of points out how healthy skepticism has been bred out of civilized people, especially us Americans.
If you look at their tactics for recruiting, however, it becomes clear why they have gained such success. The VERY FIRST THING that happens when some noob expresses an interest in their cult is that the person is given this really long complicated questionnaire. There are like a thousand questions on this thing and they ask the same questions over and over, just phrased a bit differently each time. What they do is put all the information the noob gives them in an analysis engine and that spits out a profile of that person. The Scientologist recruiter then knows that person’s weaknesses and what he/she is most afraid of and insecure about, and what he/she hopes to achieve in life. (Most people love filling out questionnaires, too. They know that.)
The recruitment process then becomes quite aggressive and the new person is subjected to interrogation and intimidation. There’s also an aspect of "pyramid marketing" to this pseudo religion, in that the more people you recruit, the higher in the organization you rise.
Unless other cults that are more selective about who they indoctrinate, the more fucked up, clueless, and insecure you are the more your Scientologist masters will like you.
A former roommate of mine had the misfortune to become involved in Scientology. He brought home the questionnaire and right away I was like "throw that fucking thing out man, I don’t want those fuckers calling here!" and he said, "Oh calm down I just thought it would be fun to get my personality analyzed, I’m not going to join!" Within a few weeks we had people calling our house morning, noon, and night. THEN they actually came to the house; it was a nice-looking lady who looked very friendly. When I opened the door she kept asking for my roommate and refused to even talk to me. (Was I pissed? What do you think, dear reader?)
This guy ended up moving in with a family member to get away from the scientologist harrassment. I don’t know what happened to him after that because I stopped speaking to him.
Anyway, you do see a lot of famous people, mostly actors, who are quite public about expressing their scientologist affiliation. Why would this be? For one thing: Even though we see them as being godlike, actors are almost always deeply insecure and fearful people, very open to manipulation. I’m not saying that all actors are spineless pussies by any means, but but one thing about acting is that the actor has to leave himself open to influence-- he can’t hang onto his personality when he’s acting. Average people think that actors must be really cool because they are famous, so if they say "scientology is great! it made me so happy and successful!" then that can make someone who normally wouldn’t be interested pick up a questionnaire... and the cycle continues! ;)
