In case you couldn’t tell, I’ve added a new forum to the Paranormalists group. This one is for anything EXCEPT suggestions to improve the group, or topics realted to the paranormal; please keep those in the appropriate forums. Other than that, anything goes, as long as it follows the general rules of the site as a whole. It’s set only for group members, so if you want to keep it within the group, put it here.

People who study the supernatural classify the phenomena that most people lump together as "ghosts" under at least three and sometimes more different categories.
GHOST: This is something left behind when a person dies. Some refer to it as "ectoplasm" and say it is a physical substance just like flesh and blood. (The jury’s still out on that.) It has no motivating force or consciousness of its own, though sometimes ghosts can take on a personality of sorts, be made to answer questions, and so on. The kind of ghost that hangs around a place until that place is deemed to be "haunted" is the ectoplasmic recording of a person who has died and for whatever reason did not realize that he/she was dead, or is so afraid of going on into death that they cling to whatever they clung to in life. But the ghost is like a robot, just going through the motions of the person that is long gone.
GHAST: This is a semi-ectoplasmic being that is most often, though not always, the visual component of a magical work designed to frighten people away from a particular spot. That is, it’s like a ghost but has been constructed by a sorcerer, perhaps to keep others away from his residence or a place where treasure is buried. Ghasts are more likely to make noises, cause flashing lights, and so on. That’s how you can tell them from a ghost, which is more likely to just suddenly appear and then disappear again, or move things around.
WRAITH: A ghost is not a consciousness, but a wraith is. Sometimes people for whatever reason can’t just go on with the process of death, and get "stuck" in the physical world. A wraith is usually seen a shimmery white shapless thing that floats above the ground. You usually can’t communicate with them, but sometimes a skilled person can get information from them.
ELEMENTAL: Elementals are separate beings that belong to nature. They occupy nearly every animate and inanimate thing in nature, and many religions-- for instance Shinto and the animist religions of the North American natives-- are geared toward placating or making use of their energies. If you are in a forest or deserted wild area and just start to feel scared for no reason, that’s an elemental working on you. The generally don’t like humans and will try to run you off from their territory.
