Above is a picture of the Album cover from MY personal favorite Big Band Album.
Count Basie Straight Ahead. It IS a very raw and Straight Ahead style album as it does not have any complex arrangements. The tunes are kickin’ and that’s right . . . Straight Ahead!!
It was recorded in 1968 and it wasn’t done the way they do albums today piece by piece, bit by bit.
They recorded this bad boy LIVE!! They had to PLAY it, first shot, perfect, no mistakes. There was no "fix it later" like they do in studios today!
Now THAT’S good musicians for ya!
A drummer friend of mine got me into this album many years ago and I still haven’t tired of it yet!
It has a quintessential 1960’s sound. You might picture Frank Sinatra or any of the other great Jazz singers of that era sitting in on ANY of these tunes, if they had words! The tunes have the sound that might have made a good soundtrack for a James Bond film with Sean Connery.
Thas album will always get a 5’s from me as it just hit that spot on my musical taste buds.
You can find some sound bites on this page with a few words from the record company that currently sells the album. The Title track and Magic Flea being my personal favorites!

Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington have always been faves of mine. My jazz band teacher in h.s. was really into big band music, I can still play the sax solos from some of those "big band hits of the 40s" from memory. Our h.s. jazz band always had work on New Year’s Eve.
