Today my older brother said he wanted to go to the cigar shop and pick up some smokes and wanted to know if I wanted to ride along so I said "sure".

So after he got his cigars we decided to get something to eat so we stopped at the K&W restaurant.

While there I kept noticing a lot of police cars and men wearing suits with those litle clear plastic earphone cords protruding out of their ears.

All of a sudden the place was a buzz with chatter and folks taking pictures of some guy making he way to the banquet room.

Lo and behold it was none other than Newt Gingrich!!!

First his wife approached me and shook my hand then he shook my hand.

I know he was out for votes but I didn't have time to tell him I am a Libertarian, he was in a hurry.

That's it in a nut shell.

That's pretty neat Tommy, I don't think I've ever met anyone remotely famous. Although Obama did come to my middle school a few years after I graduated from there. And then he came to my college over the summer, when none of the students were there. Come to think of it, his touring schedule doesn't make much sense.

I'm thinking the job offer from Honest Fox News hasn't been forthcoming, so, lacking anything better to do, the campaign goes on.

In 1989, my father, my sister, and I met former Texas governor John Connally in Washington, DC.  This was on the Capitol Subway System, wihch connects the Capitol with several office buildings, and Connally was on the same train.  Anyway, Connally was considered by president Nixon to replace vice president Spiro Agnew after Agnew resigned, but he went with Ford instead.  Then Connally ran for president himself in 1980, but didn't get past the nomination process.  But he's most remembered as the governor who was shot in Dallas the day president Kennedy was killed.  And there he was on the train, just four years before his own death.

Didn't really get to say much more than "Welcome to North Carolina" and "Good luck"

He looked really tired, the road must have taken its toll on him.

But his wife looked good, better than I expected to be in person, most folks look only good on tv due to make up.

I don't care who the president is, congress really runs the show.

The president is just a name and a face anymore.
