I have had a look through the egg dir. and found a couple bits and peices, but nothing in-depth..

so i plan to today give you an in-depth egg on how to successfully search and download songs and/or albums.

i have also put important parts in quotes so they stand out a little better, for your easier viewing and benifit ^^,

What we will be doing is searching through google to find directories, which is basically a place where people upload their files.

Quote:
Directory (file systems)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

In computing, a directory, catalog, folder or drawer is an entity in a file system which contains a group of files and/or other directories. A typical file system may contain thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of directories. Files are kept organized by storing related files in the same directory. A directory contained inside another directory is called a subdirectory of that directory. Together, the directories form a hierarchy, or tree structure.

Before we start fully, i will clarify that i am going to be searching for the band Foo Fighters, and i am going to attempt to find a whole album of them.

Time to start i think.

-----
Requirements:
FireFox ( for the second part of this egg )
-----

right.
lets get started.

open up FireFox of your default browser, { note here that i am going to be using FireFox throughout this egg }

ok.
next to google.com
not going to bother screenshotting google .. as you should be familiar with google ;)

I will be using .mp3 files;
in the search bar enter the following;

Quote:
intitle:"index.of"(mp3) Foo Fighters -html -htm -asp -php -cf -jsp

Now to explain this { as other eggs didnt explain much to the reader }

"intitle:" this means search any directory that the following in.

" "index.of" " this means directory (index)

"(mp3)" we are wanting to find .mp3 file extentions, this could be changed to wav, avi or any other type of file you wish to search for.

"Foo_Fighters" this is obviously the band, this could be changed to any other band, or song name, or alternatively a band name and song, to define your search even more.

"-html -htm -asp -php -cf -jsp" this is just to make sure you purely get directories, not any "fake" directories.

---

so after you’ve wrote in;
intitle:"index.of"(mp3) Foo Fighters -html -htm -asp -php -cf -jsp

into the search bar, hit enter.

you will end up with something that looks something like this;

these all claim to be directories, as you can see i have already checked a few of them out.

i have found a descent one, 7th link down;
Quote:
Index of /music/Foo Fighters/In Your Honor
Index of /music/Foo Fighters/In Your Honor. Name Last modified Size De5cription ... 28-Feb-2007 07:10 7.0M What If I Do.mp3 28-Feb-2007 07:13 9.2M.
the76.com/music/Foo%20Fighters/In%20Your%20Honor/ - 3k -

just by looking at this on the google results page tells you a lot,
the fact that it says " Index of /music/Foo Fighters/In Your Honor " tells me that its more than likely legit.

right.
now we’ve found a pretty legit looking link, click it and you will be given a page looking like this;

Quote:
This is what a real directory looks like.

from here, right click any of the links, and click save link as.
( InternetExplorer: Rightclick/ save target as )

ok so now you’ve downloaded the whole album, or the particular songs you wanted.
you have also probably found that it is a lot faster than a lot of the P2P sharing networks, such as limewire etc.

but you’re also probably thinking;
"damn, this is a lot of effort just to find a song or album when you can just fire up limewire and download easier."

well..
this is where the 2nd part of my egg comes in, i am now going to write an in-depth part on how to just write in the band name or song into the address bar and hit enter, with all of the hard work done for you.

-----
This is the part for FireFox only, so dont comment asking if this is for InternetExplorer because i dont know =]
-----

Here we go;

Hit ctrl+B,
ths will open up your book marks pannel on the left hand side of the screen.

then right click an already made bookmark ( dont worry we’re not overwriting anything )

then click " new bookmark ",
it will then bring up a box looking like this;

ok, now everything has to be copied exactly as i write it here.

in the "name" part you need to write "directory index"

in "location" write "http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=intitle%3A%22index+of%22+%28mp3%29+%s+-htm+-htm+-php&btnG=Google+Search&meta="

that url is the url that comes up in the search bar when you search, but note here there are no band names etc in this search but the two characters "%s" are this is so it is left blank, so you can put in your own search. This will be explained more in a moment.

in the "keyword" section write in "music" or another ’trigger’ word you want to use, e.g "dir"

you can leave "de5cription" empty as its not needed for what we are using it for.

ok.
now you’ve entered all of that, hit ok.

we now need to test that this works.

go to the address bar and write in "music"or whatever your keyword was and then put a space, then write the band name you want.

i am going to search for cannibal corpse.

and now look, its given you the same search, but with minimal effort.

so now all you have to do now is write in 1 word and the band or song name.

{ note: that on clicking a link, some may be fake directories, remember to see the "details" that the file has a filesize, otherwise it is more than likely just a link to a mp3 download site, which is usually occupied by viruses, ad-ware and mal-ware.

also i have found that urls looking like this;
www.listen77.com/mp3s/Foo%20Fighters%20-%20Best%20Of%20You.mp3-613/
are just flash mp3 players, so anything in the google results that has the url listen77.com isnt actually an mp3 download link. }

Hope this was informative and helped =]
This took a long time to write, vote fairly ;)

any questions, just ask.

Enjoy;
